The standard by which all other build threads should now be compared. Really enjoyed reading that and the bike's not bad either!
As others have said, I'd started to lose my retro mojo and have found very few bikes of interest on here for a while but this has changed all that!

Apologies Mark. I hadn't realised you had posted.
It was good to see you after so long at Christmas. If im honest resurrecting long lost trails from our teenage years was a trip down memory lane if im honest (if not a little tiring in our old age) made all the better with a cold beer.
But it was good to be able to ride those trails 25 years later, made even better by sharing the anniversary of the Stratos 25 years after it was made.
I was hesitant because of your thoughts on Campagnolo components on a mountain bike, but chuffed you threw a leg over and had a go and confessed they are simply components to be used.
Keep up the good work mate, and don't leave it so long next time...! Perhaps the Easter Club Ride if you can make it...?

The finish on the bike is not truly represented in simple photos on a screen. You have to be able to touch it and feel the texture of quality that oozes from its simple steel tubes that have been crafted into what could really be called 'Art'.

I have never liked the Campag stuff, I always thought it to 'Showy' and not suitable for a bike that was meant to get muddy and possibly broken. I have changed my mind. Its not often that I admit I may have been wrong, and this is not an admission, merely an acknowledgement of other worlds.
I wonder if I can restore my 1985 Maverick to the same factory spec as this ready for its 30 years next year. I doubt it.
If ever a bike deserved a special banner for simply existing...........

I recently asked Roberts Cycles whether Chas would build one of these again (or an e-stay with modern tubing), but sadly the answer was no. The reason, it seems, is the down tube needs to be butted in such a way to accommodate the join with that little second down tube, and such tubes are no longer made by anyone.
Sinnerman, you probably know more about this issue than anyone else here - is this true? My only chance to own a custom built steel e-stay is to find a super-rare retro one?

To be fair to Roberts, I feel in this specific design it isn't easy to buy tubes with the right butt lengths required, but not all e-stays are fabricated in the same way, look at Dave Yates and Yeti, Overburys etc, all achieved the E-stay platform with a slightly different format.
I guess the truth of it is, the original e-stay created as many problems as it solved bitd.
He certainly did solve those problems, with normal double diamond frames he was working on, and they became the stuff of legend. (White Spider Ultralight, CR, followed by the infamous D.O.G.S B.O.L.O.X).
