Roberts Stratos-Elevated Chainstay-25th Anniversary.

Re: REQUIEM.......25th Anniversary.

 wow, that's a serious amount of time and dedication! and the results show it. stunning restoration, kudos to you.

but you must be some serious crazy to just free balance the bike for photos after all that! :?

Re: REQUIEM.......25th Anniversary.

Beautiful bike and a great story. 1989 is when it started for me, as well. It's almost hard to believe it's been 25 years since I bought my first MTB, a 1989 Nishiki Alien. I agree there was a serious amount of innovation back then, which is what made that era so exciting.

btw, the link to the original eBay auction doesn't have the pics of the damaged frame. It would be interesting to see the before and after pics side-by-side for comparison. In fact, because so few were made, perhaps some pics exist of the bike as new bitd?

Re: REQUIEM.......25th Anniversary.

Nicely done Carl, very nicely done indeed; and for the second time only, I am NOT going to suggest you go and get it covered in mud.

Once things have dried up though, I would love to read a back to back to back on the three Robert's, that would be a fascinating trip along the evolution of design.

Re: REQUIEM.......25th Anniversary.

I have to say I have not been that inspired on the retro bike front this year. I just haven't got in to it and was maybe thinking off selling up the collection.
then POW !!

That is one hell of a bike. in 89 I was was on my third mtb a Marin pine mountain, so this would have been my dream super bike back then. still looks amazing now. Just like a Ferrari F40 would have been the super car of the time and still turns heads today. I bet if you ride that down the road it gets a few looks. personally that would be right up the top of the all time favorite list .

That is an immaculately turned out bike. the big flake paint is hard to do and looks amazing along with your normal level of finishing is really inspiring. right i must go and find my dream frame......

Brilliant bike that has inspired me to find a new project.

Cheers Bud, I had nearly given up hope of ever finding one. If it wasn't for this place it may have never happened at all.

That is the shit! Awesome; and I don't use that word often at 45 years old and counting! Love it from the bottom of the tread to the nose of the lofty saddle!

thanks mate. apologise for the lengthy thread, had a long time to think about the Who, the Why and the Where, and try to pull it all together for future reference.

Carl, these are not the words of some sycophant out to gain favour or try and fit in with a particular forum demographic, but that is truly stunning. I know that there are people who don't always see eye to eye with you but surely, even they must admit, that you are all about the bikes. IMHO a great build thread, although not essential, really showcases a bike's history and provides a back story to the project so that anyone can read it and come away understanding a little bit more about the bike in question and how it came to be. Your build threads really demonstrate your passion for the bikes, their history and your attention to detail. The photo's are, as always, excellent and hopefully we get to see a few muddy shots in the future :D

I would never of thought that mate, I know you get it. For me it is always about the bike, and it is a shame on occasion nonsense and misinterpretation gets in the way, but that's simply the internet for you.

Long projects like this are always hard, stressful and riddled with hurdles to overcome as well as being costly. But it does allow time and opportunity to speak first hand to the makers, learn a little more and understand the whys and wearfores of things..., time lines I have found an interesting topic, so much is lost with British Steel, and I guess many builders never dreamt that there would be a whole Community with a passion for things 25/30 years after the fact.

Some think its crazy, some are stunned but all appreciate....

Keep up the good work yourself and thank you for sharing too, we have similar tastes for sure....

Thanks Carl, you have inspired me to either find a Roberts stratos or Mantis Valkyrie and restore it or make one from scratch. also i am now looking into spray guns that can do flake. i have done pearl but that looks soo good i am gonna work on some paint his year.

Loving your work. respect of the real and lasting kind. that bike is now etched in my mind.
