I think it's the juxtaposition of urgency and suffering that makes this photograph. Not to mention the old adage of being there at the right time and place and close enough. It's clear the photographer was sharp and studied composition and framing. There is humanity and help in it too, but it's clear who is the one who get their hands dirty. I don't think it's anything related to class, but the racing back then and sending these guys in rural regions for the entertainment sakes is totally at the image forefront captured in about 1/125s of a second.
It is an excellent picture, almost looks staged.

Have you noticed too the bloke holding the handlebars has probably fcuked the brake cable for good.

Talk about a bad day at the office.
