Road mechs on mtbs

That's because the XT is actually a medium cage ;)
The short cage M735 rear mech was sold as an SS, not a GS:

Contemporary catalogues confirm. I don't have one on hand to measure, but I think it's a touch shorter than the GS cages that are generally considered to be medium, while still being a touch longer than the road SS mechs that are truly short.

Can anyone give us some numbers?

Very true

SGS = Super Long (total capacity 38T)
GS= Long (total capacity 36T)
SS = Short (total capacity 28T)
in shimano terms
not until 1992 with XTR did we get something in between SS and GS with a real 'medium' cage (total capcity 33T, but with a SGS max rear of 32T, GS was just 30T officialy)

DuraAce was the only mech with a lower capacity down at 26T, but also with a lower max cog of 26T)

DX etc was also SS and SGS, not till lower down the range did GS appear, even SS was still available

Of course it was the 6/7speed era (MTB, Road was already at 8sp) and the range of a 6speed wouldn't need such a large chain wrap.

In fact, at least in 1991, 105 (RD-1055) a commonly used mech had the same spec as the XT Short cage
Suntour of course in their McroDrive range made short cages, I forget the bolt to bolt length.

wow thats a beaut! any more pics/onfo?

I run an XT mech with an Ultegra cage (the one with the filled in bit at the bottom) with a 12-24 cassette and 28-38-46 rings on my Ozark. It works fine in all gears. It does however point out my increase in weight since 1987.

i ran a durace from the late 80s..chain tension was a sod sometimes and it would slip because of it...otherwise id still have one now...my mavic is quite a short cage...

I have a few derailleurs - road and mountain - lying around, so I've measured the cage lengths from pulley bolt centre to pulley bolt centre in mm. I don't have an M735-SS though. Can anyone add it to the list?

Campagnolo Super Record 46mm
MAVIC 840 46mm
Shimano 600 6400 48mm
Shimano Dura Ace 7700 49mm
Campagnolo Daytona 9 (short) 55mm
Shimano XTR M910 GS 67mm
Shimano XTR M951 GS 67mm
Campagnolo Daytona 9 (medium) 73mm
Shimano XT M735 SGS 86mm
