How do I know if my Ringle super duper bubba whatever it is called rear hub can do 8spd? (Or even 9spd). My 94 Stumpjumper came with an Lx 7spd cassette when new so when I built this wheel set using Ringle hubs around 1996 I stuck with 7spd.

I can post a picture if that helps.

First issue is screw on freewheel or splined slide on cassette.

Assuming slide on, then if you're running 7sp without a spacer then you're stuck with 7sp, pending a new freehub body, but I think there may be more to change than that.

If you slide on is 7sp with a spacer then it will be fine for 8/9/10sp by removing the spacer.

Thanks guys, hopefully these pics help with the recommendation if the 8spd conversion is doable for me or not.

take the cassette off and see if there are any spacers in there that might let you fit an 8/9 speed

One little-known trick is to use an '8 from 9'. If you discard the largest cog and spacer from 9 speed, it fits exactly on a 7 speed hub. So you still get 8 gears but need a 9 speed shifter and chain of course.
