rim eyelet cleaning

Re:

I do all my rust removal with Oxalic acid. A heaped desert spoonful in a pint of warm water for small parts. Rims are a bit more difficult unless you have a large shallow tray that a rim can fit in. If not you have to submerge as much as you can and turn it to the next section every 12-14 hours.

Re:

+1 for Oxalic acid. Bit more gentle than Phosphoric. Cheap as chips too, I have a load if you want some Mike.

In the past I've found that if you gently scratch the rust off with a small screwdriver the chrome is revealed again (Mavic Module E rims).

cola is nasty stuff. amazing that its legal to drink it. Who would put phosphoric acid into a food product !
the 20p a big bottle supermarket own brand is excellent for cleaning engines, insides of radiators etc. dissolves bone and flesh overnight too.

Hmmm, that's saved me a trip to Tesco then!

Brass wire brush does the trick.

I use oxalic acid too, rust is basically iron oxide and treatments remove the oxygen (reduction) to return it to metallic iron which looks shiny when polished. The other option is to get a small brush and some silver Hammerite.

I cleaned up some brass eyelets using some small pieces of Scotchbrite pad cut about 8mm diameter, which I pierced with a 3mm drill bit in a cordless drill. Pushed up against the chuck and inserted into the eyelet, a quick whizz with the drill cleaned each one quite nicely. For the worst ones I used a little disc of fine emery paper instead, it only touched the top of the eyelet, not the aluminium.
