Rigid/Suspension axle-crown/travel correction exasperation.

I have a GT Tequesta which I think was made in 1998. It came in 2 versions. According to an advert from 1998 featuring exactly this bike, it came with either a "11.8 CrMo w/Bolegna Cut" or a "Rockshox Indy C", which I believe (based on a little Googling) had 60mm travel.

What length (axle to crown) forks can I get away with on this bike? I've currently got some rigid steel On One forks which work but aren't very nice - I think they're 420mm - and I've just got hold of a pair of Project 2s which appear to be 440mm - should I try it with these or will it handle dreadfully / explode?

It would be great to find some kind of definitive guide to what length rigid forks are equivalent to what travel suspension forks but I've failed to do so so far.

well 420 should work fine, but if you have the 440 forks try them, i had an alpinestars that as standard had 390a-c forks, i fitted 420mm rc31 forks and preferred it. all it does is slacken the head angle a bit and sometimes that can be an improvement, but not always, try it to see, if it rides weird swap them back.

I've seen a couple of charts regards a-c and sus correction but there's slight variation between brands and how much sag you're used to running. FWIW I used to have a '96 GT Timberline that never felt right on anything but its OE rigid fork. As stated, suck it and see!

I think I might not suck it and see - having had a look, I don't think I want the front end any higher than it already is. I may be posting an advert for some never used Kona P2 440 A-C disc + V forks shortly...

Meanwhile, anybody got some shorter rigid forks going spare?

how short do you want?? I have an old alu disc and v fork, 410??a-c. I'll check when I get home, if you like. they're in a well used condition...

I was thinking steel, but if they're trustworthy forks, I reckon I'm interested. 410 is probably ideal.

By '98 I'd expect 410-420 to be about right.

I did have Mosso aluminium forks on before, but decided not to trust them as they bowed so much when I braked, hence the steel ones I'm using now.

I should mention in case it's useful to anyone who finds this thread, I started essentially the same thread on Singletrackworld forum, and a helpful chap called letmetalktomark posted this:

I've always gone by .....

410mm AtoC 60 to 70mm travel
420mm AtoC 80mm travel
440mm AtoC 100mm travel

These are lengths for rigid forks.

Seems a useful rule of thumb type guide, which I'd failed to find on the entire internet, would you believe.
