Right, come on, someone explain ISIS to me in terms of BB's!

Got my eye on a Race Face crank set on the bay, but it needs an ISIS BB - this is different to the Hollowtech ES Shimano BB I have, yes....? :?

(Soz, I'm just not at all up to date with this 'modern' stuff at all.....)

Yes its different. No I don't know why or what is better / worse about either alternative. Yes I got it wrong first time. But plenty out there to choose from so lots of options

it's a spline system similar to octalink, but different. Requires a different, ISIS specific BB. ISIS BBs are famous for lasting about 10 minutes.

Re:

Same basis as a recent discussion about brand-new XT hubs..

The ISIS BB's have a much larger axle spline compared to Square Taper, and even larger than Octalink.
To fit the larger axle in a BB that's the same diameter, the bearings have to be smaller, so they are more at risk of getting damaged as they are smaller and weaker.

New Hollowtech and other external BB's get around this by using a massive spindle but sitting the bearings outboard of the frame BB shell. This is better for the bearings, but leaves them more exposed to the elements, particularly if you ride in muddy, gritty soil.

Personally I've moved away from ISIS and won't use it again after the experiences I've had. (Not all ISIS cranks fit all ISIS BB's properly, despite the 'IS' part of the name standing for International Standard). They need unusually high torque to tighten up the crank bolts to stop them coming loose (which in turn can damage the splines if they're not correctly aligned) and they have a habit of creaking like an old door hinge while powdering their bearings.

Advantage of ISIS is that they are about the lightest BB/crank weight you can get a lot of the time, and they are stiffer than many SqT setups (how much of this is simply age advancing materials I don't know), but I'd stick with Octalink or SqT for the majority of off-road bikes with a conventional BB shell.

Re:

You know what, this is starting to convince me of the advantages of good old fashioned old school square taper, and as I have a spare XT BB in that flavour...

Re:

on the bright side, quite a few of the isis bbs have replaceable bearings, if you wanna do that every other ride, and the tapers dont get instantly mashed when the bolts come loose

if you had your heart set on using isis cranks there were a couple of brands that had outboard bearings, will be hard to track one down though. truvativ exo-gigapipe or something like that was one, and echo made one too. not the howitzer ones you will find tho, they look like isis but arnt.

i wondered if it would be feasible to fit an isis spidle into a bb30 shell, should be doable with the right size bearings. or you can get 83mm width ones which could fit into hollowtech 2 cups, if anyone makes bearings the right size. no point really cos i cant think of any isis crank special enough to warrant the effort, most had a square taper variant anyway.

tbh i kind of wonder why they ever got rid of cup and cone.

"tbh i kind of wonder why they ever got rid of cup and cone."

God, anyone would think this was a site for those funny 'retro' bikes or sumat.....

Frame is sorted, have rest of bits, going square taper and bugger the rest of them....

Re:

I think of it like what betamax is to vhs, its a marketing ploy to improve something that nothing is wrong with to try and make you spend more money.

But you end up sticking with what you already know and trust... Ie a square taper
