Reynolds 753 tubeset

Why bother with such tubesing? There are many steel options worth preserving with that don’t fall into laminate or cold set problems.I’m always happy with the. CROMO in most instances of building even without the need for lightest weights.

I guess we all need the right steel, which is a great benefit.

@Canuk are you still thinking of DIY? That's audacious — you could use it for Audax!
I'm certified in 753 but I only made two frames with it, made a similar number in 531SL which is almost as thin.
Ironically I wasn't certified yet when I made the frames I made, circa 1980, then got certified but didn't make any more after that. That's not the usual order, but I've always done things backwards.

You probably know, earlier sets were metric-sized only. So if that's yours, then your lugs need to be sized for metric too.

I still have maybe 3 sets of 753 road, old metric-sized and a set of off-road, not sure if I'll use them in this lifetime but I just like having 'em.

Do you know Kevin Sayles? He used to be at Woodrup, and Bob Jackson before that (started in '71), probably other postings too, but now he makes frames under his own name. He's very familiar with 753, and quite an artist, beautiful frames.

I'm not really thinking seriously about DIY, I've built a couple of Columbus and 531 frames, which both needed fair bit of cold setting to 'perfect, them and from all the literature I've read 753 is not quite so forgiving after the build. 531SL makes a lovely light frame.

I'll probably give the job to a local frame builder he's young (30) but accomplished (his old man used to build for Bernard Hinault) and he's quoted me a good price. I want the tube set to turn into something usable!

Yep that sounds like a good idea. Be sure to keep us updated.

Will the FB share in-process pics? Personally, I love that sh... uh stuff, though it might bore some people. As detailed as possible, if you ask me.

He might do, I'm seeing him this weekend, but he only builds roughly 20 frames a year and I'm at the end of the list He's got tube sets and lugs inherited from the old man going back to the forties, in the original boxes!

Yeah if it can be done I'm thinking vintage Nervex lugs perhaps chromed all round for the build, and a nice Cinelli full sloping fork crown. Maybe later Nervex was of better quality, but he has some really crisp and detailed lugs dating probably 60/70s going by the boxes.

Reynolds used to say "no chrome" on 753, some tech mumbojumbo as to why, dunno if it's real.
