Wasn't it something about chrome plating makes it brittle? A bit like rustless spokes were chosen over chrome where durability was a priority (before stainless became mainstream)

Yeah, I remember reading that a lot of big box manufacturers used 531SL or 653 for the forks and stays to cut down on the $$$s costmaybe the French instruction sheet was shorter, or they didn't read it?
Iirc a lot of 753 and other top reynolds frames had cheaper/ tougher stays, and this wasn't always clear on the literature.
Additionally top products often weren't built with an eye on longevity.
