I would have thought that a simple repair shouldn't be out of the question ....

Well my '95 Explosif certainly isn't - I don't worry about whether it will ever fail at the dropout or not, I can't see much point in owning a bike and then being reluctant to ride it, especially as that's not likely to be a life threatening failure (your life, I mean) even if it ever does occur.
