The Retrobike Rides Monthly Newsletter - March 2011

Back once more, the monthly RetroBike Rides newsletter.
Another hugely busy and eventful month has passed and another action packed one begins. Last month saw Round 1 of the National Ride Series finally take place at Cannock. It proved enormously popular with over 45 riders in attendance. The muddy conditions were a bit tricky but everyone had a good time and finished the day with smiles and a barrel of beer.

The updated points for the championship are shown at the bottom of this newsletter. The scoring method is a mix of all sorts and is also a closely guarded secret. If anyone who attended isn’t on the list, then please get in touch so it can be updated.

This month has also seen entries submitted for Mountain Mayhem, an event that's always well attended by RetroBikers.
Last year over 60 members met up for racing, riding, drinking, heckling and more. This year appears to be even more popular with known entries from 2 ten person teams, 4 teams of 4-5 persons and two solo entries. The organisation shown by the AEC’s to make this happen has been truly breathtaking, culminating in me writing a cheque for £1572 and handing it over to the Mountain Mayhem organisers in person on entry day.

Retrobike Rides have now been going strong for many years. They have evolved from a couple of dodgy looking characters meeting in the woods to ride their retro pride and joys to groups of up to 40 enthusiasts meeting up to enjoy their bikes, company and trails.
In doing so a friendly atmosphere has been created and good riding manners developed, giving Retrobike Rides unique qualities and banter. As always with Retrobike Rides, everyone is welcome and made to feel welcome.
All abilities are catered for with the rule being we only get round as fast as the slowest person, with short cuts and chicken runs being planned into the routes.

If this appeals to you, please come and join in at one of our National or Local events.

February:
has been a quiet month, lots of the usual disorganised planning and hardly any riding. Though rojo and rob mac have been phoning each other, the old 'you hang up'' no, you hang up'...
Roll on March with the longer days and the better weather.

March:
may see the next organised MacRetro ride. big eck has been threatening a trip to Laggan but details are remarkably scarce at this time, also velo is planning a wee road trip to Aran, so stay tuned.....

February:
This month saw us meet up with the North West chaps at Settle, for a day of grand vistas and rolling moorland trails.
The Great British weather had different ideas though, Snow, low cloud and mist tried to dampen the 15 retro rider's spirits. But it was all smiles in the car-park at the end of the ride.

March:
The 19th sees the return of Kaya's Kildale Kake Run over the North Yorkshire moors to the cake shop and back again. We've booked dry trails and sunny sunshine for the day. We hope they can make it.

February:
Overnight snow couldn't put off a joint venture out onto the moors for 15 riders from the NWA and NE&Yorks area groups. An eventful ride between Settle and Malham was rewarded with lung busting climbs, brake smokin' descents, but sadly no scenic vistas due to the heavy fog. All in all it was great though.

March:
There will be a trip to the Clywdian Hills in North Wales on the 12th and then some High Peak riding based around Hayfield in Derbyshire on the 26th of March.
All welcome over on the North Wales & The North West area forum

February:
Numbers swelled in the East Midlands area on the regular Tuesday night rides - we have had up to 10 people attending. If you visit our Area Section here you can see the routes we do (amid the chat!) and a selection of photos from the rides each week.

We also did a ride in the Peaks on a Thursday which was tough but fun. The weather held off (mostly!) and we were entertained by the lady in the deli with her stories of ham-stealing gypsies (her words). Pictures and route here.

March:
Tuesday night rides continue on the following dates 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th all at 7pm Ticknall Village Hall car park unless otherwise stated in the chat/rides section. There is also a ride out to the Long Mynd in Shropshire planned for Thursday 24th. Please state interest in attending in the chat/rides section. The route is here. Occasional Sat/Sun morning rides also take place - keep your eyes peeled in the chat/rides section as these tend to be at very short notice!!

February:
Cupid's Arrow, the rebadged Turkey Twizzler, went off in mid February with a splendid turnout of 40+. Riding consisted of a very wet loop of Follow the Dog and the Monkey Trail (well, for everyone but me and two others although I maintain that I was using ride leader's perogative in taking the racing line and arriving back at the lunchstop in order to lay out the food. The two others will claim that I got lost. They know nothing). The post ride social involved a large jumble sale of old bike bits - two left handed NOS leather track mitts anyone? - plus catering courtesy of A2Zest and Retrobike - the goats cheese, rocket and caramelised red onion tarts went down well, as did the subtly Valentine's themed heart shaped shortbread. But the icing on top of the cake was Spencer with a barrel of delicious specially brewed beer. All in all a top day out which could be guaged by the fact that we spent as long chatting afterwards as we did riding.

March:
The planning begins for the next National round to be held in the Forest Of Dean May 14th.

Midlands out.

February:
A few of the Anglian & one lonely Lincs member attended the national meet at Cannock. Thoroughly enjoyed the ride and meeting some familiar and new members. The West Midlands group did themselves proud and maintained the high standard of the meets so far. Our team plans for Mountain Mayhem have slowly evolved and it looks as if we will have a mixed 5 man team and a 4 man team attending.

March:
Looks like a quiet month with nothing planned so far. We had a poll for where we would like to ride with a choice of Chicksands, Thetford or Tunstall. The jury is still out so but we may have a short notice mini-meet towards the end of the month. Keep your eyes peeled on the Anglian & Lincs area rides thread.

Edit: A short-notice meet has been arranged at Thetford on the 6th March as Cannondale King is returning to the frozen north soon. Details in the Anglian & Lincs region area.

February:
A pretty good month for riding so far. There was a small group who headed off on one of Jonny’s infamous IOW rides (this was, strictly speaking, last month but we’re a bit light on rides ).
A cracking days riding was had in glorious (if windy) weather. Full write up here: ---> http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=134870

The main event in February, for some of us, was attending the Cannock ride.
An early start was had by us all to get to Cannock for 10am. I set off from Bournemouth at before 7am and headed up to pick up Heathy.
I had a good selection of 92’ drum & bass at the ready to keep us awake, and the conversation soon turned as blue as the clear skies
A great day was had at Cannock and four very muddy bikes and riders ventured back down South! (we left Jonny and Adam chatting in the car park)
I thought it was a good effort from the South West to have 3 AEC’s in attendance, but there may be security issues with having two travel in the same car in future :D

March:
The South West have a ride planned for the 20th March at Haldon: ---> http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=133664
I’ve not ridden there so I’m really looking forward to this.
Its looking like a decent turn out so lets hope that the weather plays ball.

With the onset of the lighter evening, I’ll be inviting anyone that fancies it out for regular Purbecks rides.
I’m always open to trying new routes so any South Westerners with suggestions should feel free to contact Jonny, Makster or Heathy.

Jonny has been a busy boy organising the Southern 10 man team for Mountain Mayhem. It looks like the 'dream team' has now been assembled so now we just all need to get ourselves into shape!

Have a good month folks :D

* These low scores generally indicate that Sinnett177 couldn’t recognise you and so could only score on basic things like attendance. If you drop him a PM with a description of who you are and what you were riding you will have your points amended. If you've been missed off completely, again PM as above.

Enjoy your riding!
