Retro spd's

im with paul on the original 737 spuds......a good broad stable platform, easy and positive to engage on the move too.....a little heavier than some later offerings but dead right from day one for me.....they look huge on a period xt crank, like a toffee apple from the fair!.....i first saw them on paul hintons raleigh during an elite race at cannock in about 1991, the noise he made leaping onto his unshouldered bike and clipping in has lived in my memory since.....they remain to me the very epitome of retro mountain biking along with the xt thumby.....great stuff..... :D

737 SPDs on my mountain bike and 737 SPDs on my road bike too.

Whole heartedly agree with the posts above - great design, and up there with the indexed gears and STI shifters IMO.

I remember doing quite a few paper rounds so I could get a pair as soon as they came out... ...and then falling off a lot for the first couple of weeks while I got used to the release action.

One of them has been missing a tension bolt almost since I got them but as I use them almost as loose as they'll go I've never bothered trying to fix it. Anyone know how difficult those bolts are to replace?

They are all but impossible to find as replacements.
I do however have a spare one if you want to PM me your address so I can post it to you.

Interesting split of posts. One of the reasons for going with Onza bitd is they were "not Shimano". After the demise of Campag and Suntour in MTB it was a sport, a duty even to put together a build with as few as possible big S parts. Onza for pedals, brakes, tires, grips and bar-ends, and lot's of Ritchey, SRAM, Sachs, RaceFace and Rond etc. plus Tioga, Tange and Dia Compe.

FWIW SPD's are now almost standard on my builds, 424 and 545's with the platform. And the new XTR trail pedal is working out very nice indeed.

Enjoy!!

Do the onzas work with shimano cleats?

Tc

Nope, totally unique cleats that are getting harder to find.

But, you do get 2 sets of cleats in one, as the have 10degrees of float, or, rotate them 90degs and you have 6degs of float!

Standard 2 bolt fitting though.

For me the Onza's.... simple pedal and works OK...

And... still spare parts (cleats, elasomers, bearing) for sale if you need 'm (http://mombat.org/MOMBAT/PartsForSalePages/pedals.html)

+1 for 747's.

Was using them until recently when I switched to a single sided Wellgo Magnesium pair. OK not really retro but a fairly light pair of pedals at 238g for the pair.

The 747's have just found a new home along with my original Gearne Lazer shoes to forum members.

Some pics below.

Shimano 737 on my road bike and Ritchey Logics on four of my mountain bikes. Have the same pair I bought in the Calgary Mountain Equipment Co-Op in 1996 on my number one ride. The scars on my shins have finally faded from countless dashes to the shops in a pair of Airwalks
