Retro Shoes???

Hi people,

I've got a winter project on my hands for L'Eroica next year, a 1982 Olmo and am currently stripping it down and sourcing parts for it etc etc.

I think the bike is going to be the easy bit to be honest - I'm more concerned about clothing and more importantly shoes.

A: What sort of shoes were worn in the early eightys with strap in pedals? Are these shoes compatible with all straps and all pedals?

B: Is there anyone selling modern 'old' versions that can be worn?

Are they still making them ? Yes they are but be prepared to pay a lot of money. I have a couple of pairs of these from Italian brand Vittoria, mainly known for their tyres, and are based on a 1976 design hence the name. I can recommend them if you can get over the price. There are other sellers so google around.

By the way Lorica refers to the man made leather they are made from. I thought it must be some Italian stage town but no !

These shoes, and others like them, will fit any clips and straps pedals. The only variation is in the length of the toe clips.

I have a pair of Quoc Pham Fixed for use in good weather. They are leather and similarly fairly expensive. Nice though!

Shoes with fabric bits were about by then which means that it is possible to get old fashioned looking modern shoe. Well to some extent. Fitting them with traditional shoe plates isn't easy but you can get plastic plates that fit 2 bolt shoes. I have a pair. Not common but out there.

The Vittoria 1976 shoes are fantastic value - even though not cheap (but a lot cheaper than Dromarti or Marresi ). I've been using a pair of the Vittoria shoes since April '13 and am really happy. In terms of size, they are fairly accurate - my normal shoe size is 43/43½ (UK9) and the Vittoria's in size 44 fit like a glove. Fully recommended.

Could be worth waiting till you get to Gaioli if you dare (take something with you just in case). I picked up a pair of NOS Vinko shoes with leather tops and soles plus slotted cleats on the market there for about thirty euros in 2010. Still going strong after a few vintage events.
As far as I remember there was a fair amount of choice and the haggle was fun.
