Retro-modern fusion gravel build madness. The new Superb!

The marketing worm has buried deep inside my mind.
Even after being traumatized by two failed disk bike builds, I still can't stop looking at the shiny disks mounted on the hubs.
Costed up running a hydro set-up yesterday.
To be able to choose an independent drivetrain, I'll need to run separate brake levers with a bar-end or DT mount.
There's only one (!) non STI hydro offering that is TRP Hylex.
£300 for levers, hoses and calipers.
£50 rotors.
Probably £50 for hydro bleeding & servicing gear + time trying to understand it.
£50 Bar end shifter
£50 better pads presumably, as stock Tektros are not great.

£500 for the privilege of being able to stop while running a bar-end shifter set up. Not too bad, right. Well worth it, I'm sure.
Probably Adding an extra ~300g of weight.
If only I was 100% confident this will work and I won't have to fiddle with the brakes for hours before deciding to scrap them.

Blimey. £500 is ridiculous - and as you say there could be bad surprises. Not to mention the frame cost too for god knows what hose routing and whatever mounts they have decided on and whatever new fangled way hubs are now attached to the frame.

Long live Bowden cables!

For drop bar levers the integration with the drive chain is a double edged sword. I like the fact gear changes can be done exactly where my hands are, and even when out of the saddle. I really don't like the fact I'm locked into a system. To offset this I've got rid of all 11 speed road stuff. 10 speed STIs and stocked up on them - mainly Tiagra and 105 for doubles or triples. With a simple hack I know how to run a 9 speed drivetrain with them. For MTB I'm not going beyond 10 speed, prefer 9 or 8 speed. It means I can swap parts about as I please.

If it helps, I'm using Tektro Oryx on two bikes and have been happy with them. I use MTB cartridge pads. You may have another way which could work; use mini-Vs. The advantage is no messing about with cable hangers. I've got a set of Tekro RX5 which I've still not tried but years ago on the CX forums they were considered one of the best. The Tektro RX6 has a slightly longer arm so requires a bit more lever pull or pads set closer to the rim.

I understood Campag made some mini-Vs too which I would assume would work perfect with Campag STIs.

I never got into 10 or 11sp. Aren't they supposed to be significantly shorter lived than 7-8-9 drivetrains?
Ran 9x3 until this year. Switched to 9x1 and couldn't be happier. I find I switch gears a lot less now, so bar end probably won't be too much of an issue.
I did like the 6x2 suggestion, but 6-speed freewheels are getting harder to find and I don't want the pain of running a front mech. Friction shifter should be easy to work on 6 speeds.

Shifter wise, I've run micronew STIs 9x3 for miles and they seem to work very well. Right now have campy 10sp STIs in shimergo set-up on 2 bikes.
Campies are definitely nicer, but I still have a bruised & battered pair of micronews that will probably end up on this bike instead of forking out cash for another campy STI set.

Francine is getting ready for bottle cage surgery. Plugged in the wheels and compared the geometry with my other bikes. Should be a good fit.
The fork blades and seat stays have little vent holes. I've injected some Hydrate-80 into them and gave them a good shake to stop any rust that might have creeped into them over the last 70 years. Injected too much into the forks, so they kept leaking for hours.

There's 60mm clearance between the rims and the frame. Should be plenty enough for guards and chunky tyres.
Don't think mini-vs will have this amount of clearance?

Do any of you think I can use the old simplex mech mount to hang a kickstand there? 🤔 My only concern is that if anything goes wrong, it will jam straight into the chain.

Francine....👍
So you've bonded then!
You've misunderstood my 6x2 gear set up....a 9 speed cassette with 3 removed ! 11,12 tooth are chain killers anyway and really how much time/miles do you actually use them?
Losing three and setting up spacers to suit the chainset with whatever means of BB and chainset you go with means you can have great chainline in all gears... essentially the 12 you get are the ones you want...when you buy the cassette look at all the tooth counts not just overall range 👍
I'd look to get something like a 14- 30 out of an an MTB cassette by loseing biggest and two of the smallest. Couple that with a double ....front derailleurs really are no bother... depending on tyre choice a 50 and a 39/38 it's a go all day go anywhere bike. Done right a rando becomes the go to bike!
