A hundred and thirty years ago, the bicycle was a tool for the liberation of females.
..also the cause of America's first morale panic..
During the bicycle craze of the1890s women constituted about 3rd of the market, for the first time women could travel long distances on their own without needing a lot of money, you didn't have to pay for a man and a horse to take you places so the bike opened up the job market.
Fashions changed due to the bicycle and the layered, whalebone, corseted clothing was replaced by trousers which wouldn't get stuck in your chain.. Men folks were not at all happy with women doing things independently, medical papers at the time written by other men folks gave them a moral justification why you shouldn't be happy with women riding bikes..
They claimed cycling could change a women's skeleton.. 'bicycle hand' and 'bicycle foot' were commonly diagnosed medical conditions of the time (strength in a women's hand was considered a condition).. in an article from McGill University Science and Society department "It is thought that women are mentally and physically impaired by their reproductive apparatus and menstruation cycle, riding around on a tricycle is considered fine but riding around on a strenuous bicycle can cause a women's finite physical energy to be extinguished" other medical journals would seek out anomalies caused by bike riding.. "Riding a bicycle can cause a women to have an appendicitis and internal inflammation can cause swelling of the throat due to the excitement" .. teenage girls were thought to suffer displacement of the uterus, meaning girls who ride bikes will be unable to bear children.. The horrors!
In an article published in the NY Times titled Lunacy in England .. "There is not the slightest doubt that riding a bicycle will cause women to suffer weakness of mind, general lunacy and homicidal mania"..
I'm glad we've moved on as a species since then.. anywho, enough of the history lesson and back to posting pictures of scantily-clad women on the internet..
