Retro Bikes of Quality

Nove,

Certainly a bike with historical significance. An early attempt with butted ti. Not the 1st attempt, but with the sleeves it was another and unique attempt. I like it. It looks certainly distinctive and even artistic :) Through my eyes it is more a millestone bike than a bike of great quality. The frame was a pain to build. There was a lot of waste and many faults. Moreover it was one of the nails in FATs coffin.

If I had to nominate a FAT for great quality it would be a Serotta built Yo. The Yo-Eddy chassis gets a lot ravings because of its riding qualities, especialy from heavier riders. The welding is good and the paint is durable with a nice deep gloss. Mass built FATs are crude.

true, in fact second gen Fats are better. Dunno, maybe I'm misinterpreting the word "Quality" here, but I tend do consider the ride characteristics and also the amount of thought which goes into a project as one of the factors concurring to make a quality bike.

I mean, a perfectly aligned frame, without tolerances between tubes before welding doesn't necessarily outperform a well thought-out bike. For sure the 3rensho bike above was not comparable as far as performance is concerned to the ride of a 1990 Merlin or a 1991 Adroit (just to make examples of bikes I've had).

Again, it's probably my misinterpreting of the topic, and you're for sure more precise when you speak about "milestones", but, even if many of these bikes broke, in my opinion, by quality bike I mean somethng like this (but 4 sure you don't even know what it is ;) ):

Yes, me too ;) ...and it is even not my 1st. Many reasons to appreciate them for, but not quality.

Well, an easy definition of RBoQ is any bike that I have previously owned, like that mandarin Yeti!

 Really why?

Because they weren't built by National, duh.

Yes, that can't go unnoticed.

Don't get me started on Yeti quality again ;)
