Restoration MKM Wes Mason

My thoughts are... If you're going to ride it and hopefully enjoy riding it, get it refinished in a colour you like and get matching or contrasting tape and cable outers depending on your taste.
I'm no expert on MKM frames, but for me, it's not like it's a Team colour or perhaps special edition. As just mentioned I'm no MKM expert so happy to be shot down.

The rear mech is a NUOVO Gran Sport, quite different from the original GS.

Front mech could be a Record or a NGS, very similar.

Potentially a nice bike could result from this. Not sure if Lloyds have Wes Mason decals in their lists. If not on list give Nick a ring and ask.

I like the colour....................

BTW, what are those large circular things around the gear lever pivots??

Old Ned

Thanks for the info on the Gran Sport Mech.

As you know I am a product of the 70's and "Gran Sport" was not really on our radar until 1978 when they launched a lower priced campag range called Gran Sport which was a Campag Record copy in all but name....it was polished instead of anodised, rear mech had pressed metal holding the cogs and the brakes had no rubber on the adjusters but apart from that from 5 feet away it looked like Campag Record...

We could not buy it from importers and sell it in the shop but was only available from bike builders like Viking who sold it on their bikes as what we would call nowadays as a groupset..

If the OP wants the genuine feel of the mid 70's then maybe a black and decker drill might be in order :D

Cheers

Shaun

Wow, I didn't expect quite so many replies or that so many would like the colour.

@Old Ned, here's a side view of the shifters. Sorry for the poor photo, they were just at the top of a side view of the frame. They seem to be an additional wide flange washer that sits over the shifter. I'd not seen anything like that before.

Thanks for the Lloyds tip, Robin at MKM-cycles had also recommended them on the website.

The outer plate of the rear mech seems to be made of grey plastic, or something similar.

Thanks for the close-up of the 'rings/washers'. Never seen anything like them before. I wonder if there's any info here -

Nuovo GS mechs are all metal of one sort or another. Probably just a bit dull that's all.

I like the bike - and the colour!
