RESPRAY ADVICE

Retro Newbie
Hi All,

I am trying to replace my dream bike that some scumbag nicked.

I have recently purchased a Trek 7000 Zx. This is a gold frame. The frame itself has the associated scratches that you would associate with a bike produced in 1998.

How easy is it (or isn't it) to match the gold colour, do you think that Trek would be willing to give me the RAL number or are they going to be 'difficult' about this. Lastly, is it easy (or not) to get hold of the decals.....I have attached an image of what it looks like.....

I have been recommended a company in Dartford called Colourtech, any further endorsements or other recommendations would be appreciated...

Many thanks for your help.

Tony

Re:

As for Trek, ask them. What's the worst that can happen? They could say "no", or on learning of your circumstances they might just say "yes".

Re:

Have you considered contcting a Car Smart Repairer, like Chipsaway (other franchises are available).

I have had some great results from such compnies on my cars over the years, they turn up and mix the paint on site. Could be worth contacting a local guy and taking the bike to him/her.

Most I have ever paid is £35 per repair, last one about 3 years ago.

I paid £120 for a long scratch with them years ago!

Trek does not use RAL colours for their collection.

So this therefore would be their own 'special' colour? If they don't use a RAL do they use an industry standard for colour match?

Or is it more likely that they 'invent' a colour and have an internal colour match system, one of which they may not be happy to share?

Many thanks,

Tony

Re:

Find a local "paint shop products" type shop and take the frame in, I would think they would be able to mix a pretty good match and advise you of the process to re-paint.

Assuming the frame is aluminium, I would think the process would be.....use an appropriate stripping process then appropriate primer for aluminium (maybe an etch-primer) before a sprayed on primer (probably epoxy) then the base-coat (colour) and clear-coat (lacquer).

Cheers
