Resource overload / fairplay in BOTM

Re:

I think a lot of it is down to how the criticism is given. Even if some do a half-a$$ed job, they still love their bikes. It's easy to hurt people's feelings by making your criticism sound like an attack.

- The paint could use a touch-up. It would look a lot better if the outer cables were shortened. I'd also suggest putting a Turbo on there instead of a Flite, and please turn the front tyre around.

- Tatty paint, outer cables way too long, saddle is all wrong and you even failed to put the front tyre on properly.

If I would use one of those examples to criticize your bike, which one would you rather read?

+1 for above. It's all in the delivery. That's what i found difficult about some members' approach to others' bikes. Thoughtlessness is unforgivable despite the ' you put it up so take it ' view. I wonder how many of those who laid into igottaserrotta are proud of their remarks now.

Re:

I agree with both the above although I guess it doesn't help when someone proclaims their bike to be the best thing going. Still, there's no need to be rude though.

I'll gladly take constructive criticism if I have something set up incorrectly, since I'd rather be told, so that I can rectify it. For someone just to rip into someone elses bike just because they don't like it is what winds me up.

I remember a chap who joined up last year. He had a great collection of frames which he was clearly very passionate about and he joined the forum to share his passion. Admittedly some of his bikes weren't set up in the traditional way and in some peoples eyes were bordering on dangerous however the way some people conveyed their opinion was hostile and unwelcoming. I know we shouldn't take things too personally but I wasn't surprised to see him about face and leave the forum shortly after joining.

I seem to have strayed well off topic here

That assumes everyone has a good English writing capacity, I tend to write more in bullet/short and snappy form. People just shouldn't read into the wording to much.
I would probably use a mix of both, the second one if I was on my mobile as it's quicker to type. They both mean the same.

Although I would use the 'even failed to put'. But then if someone said that about my bikes they're being a dick ;-)

Re:

Despite showing us some great bikes and undoubtedly having access to loads of great machinery neither Martin or Pros Closet have won BOTM have they?

I think a lot of them mean nothing to a lot of people (me included) other than to the people who followed the American MTB scene. Despite being excellently built bikes.

It's still nice to see and read about them, iirc a TPC always makes a separate readers bikes thread with details.

Re:

have I missed something? where is the voting of patina special? who won?

Also agreed here and I wish more would criticise the bikes and the little lack of attention to detail on a bike or other shite coordination of colour, overdoing things. Cable not cut to length/left too long. Ugly tyres.
Say what you see.
Tart the bugger up for a picture.
Still get out and ride it.
I ignore patina, I like a nice looking ridden bike setup properly as though the owner could be bothered.
Other don't but that's why we have the option to vote.
Pro/lucky rich people. They can join in, some build nice bikes, some don't.

This is generally how I feel about it as well. Maybe because this is how I learned...tough love.
Believe me, some of my earlier builds were flat out stupid and deserved the criticism.

Pretty for the pics, then ride it. Every time!
I'm also a fan of patina...tells a great story.

Not everyone is a great mechanic (I barely get by), some struggle with aesthetics. All adds up to the end product.
