Aside of last resort destructive methods, loosen the crank bolts and apply lube of choice, then go for a good ride. The pedalling and vibrations frees the cranks to the point of wobbling off – just keep the bolts in but loose.
This has worked well on previous occasions with other cranks, but not with a nice pair of old Suginos unfortunately – only the left crank came loose and was forced to hacksaw the right crank down to the bolt.
if you get to the cut off stage, a dremel with metal cutting disk will do it. One bit of advise is to put some sort of wood or protection between crank and frame, you dont want to slip and hit the frame. I cut a drive side off an old frame and it took a while but removed it and the frame is still good. I narrowly missed it with the tool a couple of times and then protected it.
yep that will do it even on a flat smooth road. Just make sure you go out just as it is about to start pissing it down...and don't take your mobile phone or any tools...that will make it come off..make sure you cycle a remote route with little or no passing traffic too for 100 % reliability in this method
You can always try drilling a few holes in the crank arm close to the taper / spindle.
There's something satisfying about power tools in these cases, but done properly you will still be able
to enjoy the use of a lump hammer to help things on it's way. A rubber mallet is for delicate things,
and therefore highly inappropriate.
You lot make me chuckle! I'll try the lube, puller, tension, time & heat method first.
Only if that REALLY doesn't work am I going for a ride on it. I did mention that it's a 24" wheel for my daughter (age 9). Ok, its not pink, but I'm 6'0" and can just picture myself on it!
Will let you know the outcome ;-)
My favorite method which works better then penetrating lube in my experience:
Heat combined with melting wax into the stuck sections. The melted wax will get in everywhere and when it cools things just pop off. Give it a shot, any wax candle will do. Get the metal hot enough to let the wax flow & you're set!
