Removing Dent in Thin Steel Top Tube

Apaprently you can remove or lessen such dents using wooden / alloy block which fit around the tube. A quick google will reveal all.

I've seen this being done, but only on round section tube.

Sods law is that the 2006 dedachai Explosif frames are eliptical (well teardrop I suppose) in section.

I am talking to a few local companies to see what they have to offer.

Get a huge lump of ice - ice cream tub full of water in the freezer.

Then stand the rubbing the area around the dent with it. It will slightly shrink the metal which will pull the dent out. It's not going to get rid of it but it will reduce it. I've done it %£! and had it work.

If you want to try the freezing method then a pipe freezing kit would work better than anything, I would have thought ?

I guess. But I am going to try the ice method anyways.

Tried pipe freeze alone last year on nickel P7 frame - very slight movement but not fixed yet. Like the look of that airduster technique though :D

Before and after shots here. I applied ice around and in the dent for around 30mins. (was abe to use a chunk of ice from the duck pond!!!).

In the flesh it feels/looks like it has had some effect, but I'm not sure about the picures showing that.

I'm going to try the CO2/hairdryer method on the weekend.

Reading this with vested interest, did you ever try the air duster method. If so did it work?

Not yet, but will be soon.

Love the avatar BTW!!

You'll never get that out without mechanically damaging the tube imo. That is quite a dent, which has stretched the top and lower vertical plane either side of the dent - which is why you have the paint missing there. If it wasn't structural, such as a car panel I would tap the high points with a polished panel hammer, then fill the remaining dent. Unfortunately, hammering the high spots will stress and possibly crease the steel - weakening it potentially. Adding brass filler braze will also weaken the tubing here. I think it is worse than you may realise.

Me, new tube at Argos or ride it as it is.
