Rear Brake Cable Housing (not that one) - where from?

Hi all,

Picked up a pair of thumb shifters to switch out my current, well past its sell by date grip shift setup. Need to replace the cables and have noticed the current cable running to the rear brake runs through a grey coloured housing across the top tube that is much thinner than the standard Shimano stuff. Presumably is there to reduce frame damage etc, any idea where I can get some for the new cables? This stuff is pretty worn and when I search online all I find is standard 4mm outer housing.

I think you are talking about a cable sheath. Fits on ferrules and keeps the outer cable 'sealed' from the elements instead of the more normal exposure. It's not needed as such, you can use little rubber donuts to protect your frame from cable rub. Personally I like it. Avid used to sell flak jacket cable kits that included the ferrules and a red sheath, these are near impossible to find though. I have found other kits with black sheath (I forget the name I'm afraid) but if you already have the ferrules, you can simply use electrical cable outer sheathing if you know the diameter and can choose your colour. Heat shrink might also be an option, heat it to make a good seal around the ferrule.

It does, thanks! I hadnt thought of electrical cable, that could well do the job. I think Ive found some Jagwire stuff on eBay as well so hopefully some options, although its black and current is grey...
