Well Ian,
Canvassing is probably not the done thing and one man's meat is often another man's poison but in defence of my Colnago, the bars are 1987 Modolo Anatomic Bend (Speedy version) and the stem is a 1987 Modolo Professional. Both have been part of the bike since its purchase in 1988 and therefore are at least period correct for Italian mid-range bikes of the time (as are all other components except the inner chainring, which is - regrettably - a Stronglight as I was, at the time that replacement was necessary, unable to source a Chorus inner chain ring).
The bars are very comfortable and the stem is the perfect length, so awful or not, they're good for me and my bike
