But you're not in the business Mr Flyer, so your Utopian scenario is irrelevant. Where do you think you'll find these hyper intelligence, uber commited staff for what the average bike shop sales assistant gets paid? If the solution were as simple as you claim in your imaginary scenario then we'd all live in a consumer paradise where none of us ever suffer bad service or cause for complaint.

Even if the assistant doesn't know, simple service would be to start asking questions to get the customers business.

Again, I must ask, what do you think we'll end up with on a cycle shop assistants wages? Why do you think so many brain donors accumulate at Halfords? If a shop raised its.prices.to pay a decent salary to such a bod then we'd all be here moaning about how expensive they were instead.

As relevant as anything you have to say on the matter, blowhard! At least I HAVE been in the business, and still have a toe in it. For every dullard school leaver there is another keen cyclist who can see the perks in bike shop work, and there are incentives like profit share available to anyone running their business well to motivate staff retention.

So there, have it up you!

I know of one in a Grimsby store. Some people just like to do jobs they enjoy.

There many degree to PhD level people in low paid jobs. I know quite a lot with science based degrees and PhDs.
