Raleigh Record Sprint Black Plastic Friction Shifters.

I have the above shifters on my Record Sprint can someone familiar with these let me know the correct sequence of assembly, please.

They are a friction shifter so just get the washers right and they should work. I cant find any diagrams for you.

However, it may also be a good time to take them off and replace them with something better?

The Sprint frame was a very good 501 cromo frame that rode well once all the original low end equipment was replaced

This was my personal favourite version with all the gold, your own John Player Special F1 car in the form of a bicycle!

This one wore Shimano SL-434 shifters, I think!

Am currently rebuilding one with 10spd dt shifters.

I have the same with all the gold anodising the contrast to the black frame is striking. It is also a very comfortable bike to ride and would be better with higher end components, but I'm inclined to keep mine standard with the exception of the seat post and saddle clamp that are ghastly, those will be replaced.

The friction shifters on mine do seem to work fine, but I would like to be sure I have them assembled correctly, hence the query.I did a very hilly,(in the Chilterns) 30 mile ride yesterday on it and as usual it performed admirably.

Mine is also in excellent condition.

Try Simplex 'retrofriction' shifters then, they are far far better. The whole point of those bikes was that they were entry level with a good frame so you could upgrade the parts - those steel chainrings weigh a lot!

Thanks for the suggestion.I do actually have a nice vintage 6 speed wheelset with freehub in the loft so an upgrade of the bike would be cheap and easy and alloy chainrigs too to save some weight.

I'm fiddling with several different vintage bikes at once at the moment, though,so it'll be on the back burner.

Presumably, you have cold set the chainstays on the one you're building up to accommodate the 10 speed freehub?

They the plastic ones with the curve at the top?

Mine started slipping after one particularly long wet ride. Never recovered properly, eventually snapped one after it slipped half way up Bulmer Bank and i tried to yank it back and NOT fall off at the same time. Didn't fall off. Also didn't change gear for the rest of the ride........

Pull some basic simplex ones on, they lasted another couple of frames before i tried Campag Syncro (expensive and really not that good) and then shimano indexing.

Yes,that's right the black plastic curvy ones.So far they have worked adequately, but they are definitely not quality.

In fact you've just reminded me I have Campag Syncro shifters that I could try in place of the plastic originals on the friction shift setting.

Well,I got sidetracked by this RRS the more I ride it the more I like it.I have already replaced the black plastic shifters with Campag syncro 2 shifters with the indexing springs removed on the rear mech shifter,so it functions,(and very well I might add)as a friction shifter.

Where would you suggest is the place to look for alloy replacement chainrings? Is ebay the best bet?

I'll probably end up using a 7 speed Shimano Exage wheelset that I have on another bike in place of the original Maillard's.I have other plans for the donor bike now!

It's never ending......! lol

If its still the original gold Sugino cranks they are 110bcd so just about anything fits - ignore markings for '10spd' or similar, it doesnt matter.
