Raleigh Maverick 198?

Re:

so are we thinking this could be a late 85 frame but specced with some 86 parts? I'm wondering if this was some kind of empire stores / kays catalogue special maybe?

Re:

Check the Sach-Huret mechs for the date codes , the four ? numerals
will indicate the week and year of manufacture

I think the date of manufacture is late '86 .The fact that you have 15spds
is the source of confusion here , with such a basic spec it should be a 5spd

Its possible that it was a 'catalogue' bike , and there is some merit in the
suggestion about surplus parts from other models . My own bike has
a Sugino 'TA copy' chainset as fitted to the Raleigh Mustang

Re:

Cool pics, and nice to see another, the chap whos bike it is also noted he didnt think the rear derailleur was correct, note it also has the red bar end caps :)

So I have stupidly bought another bike on a whim

But as we all say..... I couldnt resist it, it needed rescueing, but its a classic

Raleigh Maverick

Can't quite place the year but i'm guessing at 1986, as far as I can tell its completely original right down to the mudguards and rack even the leather straps on the front brake are still going strong, the wheels cleaned up without issue -no rust in sight but the tyres were rotted out so changed them for some budget ones from the shed, but otherwise......really nice.

My only problem is I was caught sneaking it into the shed :( so I'm in trouble again.

mmmmmmm

Enjoy
I was browsing the blogs and came across your maverick, this is a real odd one, the forks and frame are off the mk2 5 speed frame, using the u brake, the mk1 frame in burgundy was tange and made by Panasonic with canti braze ons... however yours is a 15speed with u brake frame, which is odd, as it is indeed a metropolitan with maverick graphics. only thing I can think of is, they run out of metropolitan graphics and thought we`ll just stick on, what we got. was typical of Raleigh at the time. I cant see in the pictures but does yours have superbe sports drops outs, where they have long tangs and 2 flats axle, unlike a modern "U" shape drop out?

the mk3 maverick had really REALLY cheap nasty frame with mig welded drop outs, the frame was used on about 9 Raleigh atb`s of the time like lizard, mustang, marauder etc. the mk4 had a beautiful frame for an att23 frame with Shimano brazed drop outs. also used on the Memphis, team Raleigh replica and others of 87-89.

there were 3 Reynolds versions of the maverick as well, in the Reynolds SBDU 18 pro and mk1 Ozark (used 501 forks) and Avanti mk1 which used the 18 pro forks and slightly shorter, sportier frame. with all the geometry shared with the 87-88 mirage with a u brake. which you could argue was a 501 maverick. as it was the same geometry as the 18 pro.

so then we got yours lol even if it was a maverick from new, I've never seen a red mk2 with u brake mounts. very very rare!

Re:

Good find ! however your Maverick seems to be something of a maverick !

You would expect to find the steel rims ( dated '86 ) , steel hubs and caliper
brakes on the low end/ 5 spd version of the Maverick ? I always thought
that the 15/18 spd variants had alloy rims/hubs and cantilever brakes

Maybe there was an intermediate level spec ? though I have never seen one ,
until now

It would be interesting to know what front and rear mechs the bike has ,
also a view of the rear dropout to see if it is a forging or simply blanked out
yup, that's exactly what I was thinking, it`s like a prototype, like raleigh was toying with the idea of an early hybrid, could even be seen as a pioneer trail prototype.

It was a nice bike, unusual if it was aimed at the ATB market as the brakes were ... Not ideal for such duties, more of a hybrid as stated, sort of wish I kept it as a daily rider but I can't keep them all.
