Raleigh Elan 501 Reynolds frame

A mate has just given me his old racer a Raleigh Elan 501 Reynolds frame. I took it on a 19mile ride just to see if it was rideable and it sure is. A few creaks and stuff but it got me home. I was wondering if it was worth doing up. Or if i was better spending the money on something else. I have wanted a road bike for years now but kept putting it off ( i ride a hybrid or MTB ) but now i have this free bike i am kinda a road bike owner lol. Anyway any advice would be great.

New handlebar tape and hoods, lower handlebar, fit proper pedals. Done.

I have ordered another seat, Slimmer lighter one and one without a rip . I shall order some tape and lower the bars. Cleaned the hoods. Pedals I am not going for clips so flat pedals only. ( yeah yeah i know) any one selling any that might do ?
Also thinking about new wheels any ideas ?

Black saddle and tape would look good. I have a pair of pedals (one side clip one flat) that would be a good compromise pm me if you're interested. Service the bike and replace what's worn out would be my advice.
