Raleigh Dynatech Decade - swan song build..
This beautiful bike has now been sold - BUT it won’t leave until I’ve finished the latest facelift build
I enjoyed the all Euro Campag / Sachs / XLite / Hope / Wolber / Mavic
build - it was beautiful and fun but HEAVY.
It’s now being face lifted - with period correct (ish) parts - FRM CU2 chainset - Smoke and Darts - XLite Pro Stubbies and Real levers. With a Brushed silver and red colour scheme and Finish. And it’s light - just under 20lbs on my scales -
This will be entered into December botm against its younger Torus XT Trimmel
Forked brother - so hope to have this finished this week.
I’ll miss this - lighter than my Bianchi - to think that people here have spent thousands trying to get a Klein to weigh 7 kg - with some
Minor tweaks this would hit 8 kg- some extra cash it’ll crack 7 no doubt - but I’ve not the time inclination or interest - this is just me bigging this beauty British made underrated classic up.
I’ll miss it - but I was too afraid to ride it as it’s just precious.

Finished it - bar setting up the gears and cantis
Euro Build
Hi RBers
This is my Dynatech Decade build thread
I’ve been after one of these for several years and am so happy to get one.
The goal of this build thread has changed somewhat - from wanting a Dynatech decade as in the catalogue spec or as in the Hope Factory display model to a European component equipped bike and eventually it was my aim to build the most beautiful Raleigh Dynatech of any model - using as many period correct parts as I can and to stick to as many European components as I can - namely Campagnolo and Sachs - with some Hope and XLite thrown in - but to keep the Hope and XLite discreet and to a minimum.
I’ve nearly completed it and am very happy - I doubt anyone will like this as much as I will as it’s all my own taste and vision. I aim to enter it into a BoTM competition to see how it fares.
Thanks to Carambakid for selling me this gem.
A Dynatech Decade in lovely condition.
With the distinctive Gen. 1 Trimmel Forks
Has a modified XTR M900 headset
The original spec is here:
I want to build something in period but a bit different.
I saw this beauty online - which I’m told is on display in the Hope Factory.
This has Middleburn RS-1 with Hope hubs but Gen. 2 Trimmel forks and XT parts.
Carambakid kindly sold me a pair of wheels which I think are perfect for this - Hope Ti Glide hubs and Mavic rims.
Also a very special XLite Kevlar saddle with a minty XLite Matrix Seatpost and clamp.
Silver Hope TiGlide rear & Lightweight front hubs on silver Mavic 217 with red X-lite QR & Goldtec 8 speed Ti cassette.
Some XLite finishing kit too - plus XLite skewers.
Here’s what she looks like now - need a bottom bracket and sort the cabling out to finish.
So what next?
It needs quite a bit of kit to get it on the road - as I wanted it to be a bit different From other Decades I’ve seen I had to think about what would suit.
I thought that some boutique parts would go well and the frame would be deserving - this was after all a ‘grail’ bike - one which I’ve been wanting for years and which came to me out of a blue via a chance PM.
I decided on some Cook Bros RSR cranks
And had some lined up For a good price - they are in 3dv and would need polishing with some autosol. As I decided on polished cranks
Polished/brushed chain rings with a splash or colour perhaps or some gold?
By chance on eBay I saw some Middleburn RS-2 in nice condition with some Middleburn chain rings in a funky multicolour - I thought that if I had these I’d have to autosol the 3dv magenta spider. While drunk one evening I bid on them and forgot all about them - until by chance I won them! I didn’t even want them as I wanted Cooks - but after winning an auction I didn’t want to win I had to pay for them - they arrived and I quite like them - I would have to polish out the 3dc spider though.
Anyway so here she is as she looks now. I’ll have to polish out the spider and give her a nice lustrous wax!
Shifters and mechs - the stock default choice would be XTR M900 but I wanted something different - I’ve a soft spot for Sachs - I had the Quarz on a former bike and decided I’d go for the similar yet in period Sachs New Success.
I bid on and won a front and rear Sachs New Success derailleurs in nice condition. I’m bidding on Sachs Power Grip Extreme shifters - which I will win - I’ll be replacing the black shifter covers for Grey NOS ones I saw on the bay. I’ll photograph and upload the photos here when they arrive.
Next up I reckon I’ll go for in period Paul Component Love Levers - in perhaps a funky multicolour like the red blue gold of the cranks.
Or maybe not.
So I’ll need some assistance and ideas -
what brake levers and cantis should I go for ?
And what tyres? Amber walled or black?
Shall I polish out the multicoloured chain rings or change them?
Thanks
