Raleigh Dynaflite SBDU 753.... 'Manager Special'

The original rims are by Weinmann "Super" Patented Concave model A124... these are very narrow by today's standards at just 20mm and have a date code on the inside either side of the valve hole 3/79. They've polished up really well having been buffed with a pad on my drill and a final polish with Solvo. The braking surface showing no signs of wear and it looks like I'm going to need a very narrow 10mm rim tape by Velox. I'm wondering what the effect concave rims will have on the bikes aerodynamics...will they slow it down?...or will they create some kind of weird vortex that will propel me to the pub even faster..🍻

Good luck with the Grand Prix Classics. I’m not normally a puncture magnet but had a couple with these tyres in only a few miles of use.

You will find out when you reach 88 mph...;)
😂

I’m guessing they’ll not be high tension on these spokes? I heard somewhere concave rims have a weakness for s high tensioned spokes pulling through the rim so I’d try to check the correct tension required for the spokes on this design of rim..

I have a couple of sets, and they’re fine. The quality is there as far as I can tell- they are welded and the material seems to be pretty hard wearing. No issues with tyres etc. My only complaint would be that due to their shape they act like a gully...

Be using them with latex tubes on my Ribble 'Pub Bike' and absolutely love them, roll really fast and the combination of supple sidewalls and latex really improved the ride quality. No punctures so far but that's just the luck of the draw, don't think any tyre is immune and as this is going to be a very light bike I don't want to ruin the riding experience with heavy lifeless tyres. With the original tyres and tubes the front weighed 1000g, rear 1900g and the complete bike minuss mudguards and pedals 8.96kg. My main concern was whether they would explode off the hookless rims but after exhaustive testing (see page 8 ) all is looking good..👍

The rims are really stiff with no twist or flex unlaced and the welded joint virtually undetectable, building the wheels is going to be a learning curve as I've only trued up wheels on my jig. An issue I have found on the inside of the rims is a small lump of weld at the joint where the tyre bead seats....out with the Dremmel.

Nice 🍺👍

Managed to get my head around spoke length calculations and have gone for Sapin Race double butted 294mm front and rear. Going for 2X upfront and 3X rear... got the wheel jig, spoke key, tube of CopperSlip and the Wheel Builder's Bible... what could possibly go wrong..!🤞
