Raleigh 853

Yes, it was a nice enough bike in it's day

As for value, it depends what you mean by "bulges" on the wheels. If you mean buckled, that's easy enough to fix. If there is something intrinsically wrong with the carbon, they are effectively unsellable and probably need to be scrapped.

You probably aren't too far out at that price, sort of 150 quid ish, *if* the wheels can be salvaged.

The frame is probably scrap though, or you need new seat stays (minimum) and a respray, so you're looking at £100-150 quid for that.

The rusting under the fork crown probably needs looking at, but its a substantial chunk of metal, so probably just needs cleaning up.

Wise decision to pass on this one, IMO.

Just to add that anyone considering buying a good steel frame should be extremely cautious if there are any signs of rust whatsoever. In some tubes the wall thickness of the tubing used to build a lightweight frame is exceedingly thin in some areas of the tubes (remember they are butted so ends are a bit thicker)- think coke can thin. This means almost any rust will weaken them and just think how much you can’t see.

On this frame it looks likely that brackets were put on the stays to support a rack and rust started behind them. This indicated the bike will have had a harder life in all weathers meaning potential for more extensive problems elsewhere.

A lot of tin work lines in those seatstays, I'd be careful with that one.

what does that mean...
Both stays have loads of rust under the paintwork. It needs stripping back, repairing and repainting.

I have a custom version of this frame (shot in stays, vertical drop outs, custom geo) it was even provided in this colour originally. But resprayed twice since.

I'd get a quote for a repair. They were nice quality and rode quite well in the larger sizes (smaller sizes were more like touring bikes!!), but not particularly rare or "special" frames. So i wouldn't spend that much unless it has sentimental value.

Not sure why you would say the 853 in smaller sizes were more like touring bikes. Can you explain?
I have an 853 bike size 55 and it is certainly not a touring bike.

55 certainly isn't a "smaller size", it's the middle of the range (think they did 49-61 or 63 in 2cm increments).
I had a stock 51 on which the head angle, combined with fork rake (to ensure that toeclip/tyre clearance was maintained, for BS compliance) gave it amazing stability in a perfectly straight line, but meant that trying to get out of the saddle, or make any rapid changes of direction was a heart in mouth experience. As it tended to weave around a lot when you stood up and changed the weight distribution (loading the forks up), and also resist any attempts to change direction by shifting your weight around when seated. So crits and descending at speed were even more exciting than they needed to be. The only thing that i'd ridden that was in any way comparable was an old tourer that i'd had years earlier, for touring, funnily enough. I wouldn't have wanted to sprint/race on that either.
The frame the Raleigh actually replaced was an ex pro/tour Scapin Pro Racer, so going from that to something with such a relaxed set up was a shock!

When the frame was replaced after a few weeks, with a custom build, it was made with a slightly longer top tube (only 1cm i think) a 73,5 degree head tube (instead of ~70,5) and 43mm rake fork (not 50). The equipment on that was swapped over and my position duplicated exactly. Completely different beast. And a joy to ride.

I raced the new frame for another 10 years on and off. And won a moderate amount. Still have it downstairs, on it's 6th or 7th groupset and probably a dozen sets of wheels. Still gets used very regularly.

Still have the original seatpin though.
