Quick early Manitou fork question

Just a quick one... that I'm sure someone will know the answer to (pardon the pun).

On the Manitou 1... can you swap the steerers over. ie, if I find a 1" set, and I can get a 1.25 steerer, can I make the forks fit my 1.25 frame? I don't have the forks to look.

Thanks in advance.

The sliders unbolt from the crown so I don’t see why not. Just swap over the crowns. The steerer is pressed in which would make it a specialist job I’d say.

Yup, i was hoping I'd not need a crown, that maybe all the crowns were the same and you could fit any steerer to them. Sadly, this doesn't seem to be the case, so I'm now on the look out for a 1.25 Manitou 1 crown / steerer, or a set of 1.25 Manitou 1s.

Its just made things a bit more complicated because 1" Manitou 1s seem pretty easy to find at the moment.

Depend on the frame you want to mach there is a chance of switching head-sets.
Or try to find a pipe inner 1" and outer 1.25" diameter together with a a-head set should work.

Hi, yes that might have been an option, but its for a 1.25 Yeti Ultimate with a threaded headset, so not going to be an option, it needs to be threaded.

Long shot but i'm going to assume that the crowns are the same across the board on the Mani 1's and just drilled/machined out to fit the relevant steer tube - 1" - 1.1/8" - 1.1/4" etc? I actually own a fairly mint set of Mani 1s on one of my fleet, runs 1.1/8" steerer and you can change the steerer as it has twin bolts each side to allow change of stancions and also steerer.

Could you not pop your crown down to a machine shop and see if they can simply pass through to enlarge current one to bigger? Thinking about it - was 1.1/4" even established back when the Mani 1's were out? I doubt they would charge a huge amount for such a job - £10-20 cash maybe?

I recently popped an 11spd Cassette down to my local engineers to have 1.8mm machined off the backside of the alloy spider to allow it to fit onto a 1993 Shimano Ultegra 600 freehub, cost me £10 and works perfectly :)

Yes, that could be an option, I've missed out on the 1s that were on ebay now. Left it too late. So I'll keep my eye open. Hopefully a set will turn up in 1.25 if not I'll have to look at options of modifying or possibly replacing the crown,

Love the Mani 1 steerers. Got 4 of these babies as they are so easy to adapt to any Mani fork and fit any steerer length inc threaded/threadless type. You can fit a 1in steerer in a 1 1/8th crown with a shim but obviously not vice versa without machining the hole wider. NB Use a torque wrench so you don't over tighten the 4 locking bolts.

Do you think there would be a problem machining out a 1" one to fit a 1.25 steerer in there?
It needs to be done by a precision machine shop so its bored out evenly. If you tried to file the hole larger by hand eg, it’s likely the 1 1/8th steerer will not be perfectly centered, thus affecting the handling. I have a spare Mani oem 1 1/8th crown steerer if you need it. You can cut/press out the old steerer and get it bored out.
