Quick bit of advice on single speed - best ratio??

Something around 2:1 is a good starting point, then tweak as Al rightly says. A lot depends on your fitness and the local landscape!

I forgot to add that in the past I've ran 2:1 on my SS mountain bikes and 2.6:1 on my SS road bike. A larger chain ring and sprocket will reduce chain wear but increase the chance of hitting the ring whilst riding off road.

Thanks Rob, still not sure what I'm doing with the bike but hadn't thought of the potential issues with bigger rings/off roading, something to bear in mind.

As decent 7 speed stuff seems to be accumulating quietly in the parts bin, I'm leaning towards a road orientated single ring up front with a close ratio 7 speed cassette on the back...and slicks for road use (the off road proper MTB is sorted, this one might need the ability to do a little track work occasionally but mostly road)
