Ah ok, was just about to ask why you couldn't use smooth rollers, like a chain guide say, but it's just suddenly hit me :facepalm: it's the teeth on the wheels that pull/guide the chain across the cassette. All makes sense now. Don't know why I never made that connection before

Worth changing as they are not expensive.

i wish that could said for carbon versions. At 20 pounds each.

They could make them as you would have edge to keep it in track and the tension pulley wouldn't be a problem.
But it keeps it away from cages, stops the edges of the chain bashing on 'guides' if it had them. Also as it's spinning and self propelled it's quiet and should have less friction.
