Hi everyone!

A couple of things really don't make sense here:
1.) As a matter of fact I CANNOT BE A 1988 MODEL nor is it possible that it was bought in 1987...
the only thing possible in 1987 in relation to FUNK bikes was that it was "dreamed" back then-
To sum it up:
2.)Funk Cycles was established in 1989, hence it's not a 1988 model, and well it was not possible to buy a FUNK bike until
1989 at the earliest...
3.)Also the bike Daryl holds in the picture has different parts than the bike which is advertised-
4.)About the price: "Why do you have 4k = 4'000.00$ in the bike???
The total bike cost less than 2'750.00$ back then in the US....
Is there something valuable inside the tubes??;)
I think here @ retrobike it's important to base claims on facts not fiction.
Hope I could clarify a little bit.

I bought it in 1987 and DO have the receipt, but man it will be difficult to find, I will try.
I had owned it for some time before the MBA review came out which was in 1990.
It was bought as a frameset only and for quite a few years that was the only way they were sold (how do you come up with a total price on it ?).
The Merlin Ti handlebars themselves were $150 US, the Mavic bottom bracket was about the same as was the IRD seatpost.

Did you mean this picture ???

You should have done some reading when you were at the website....

History of Funk Cycles

Funk Cycles was founded by Daryl Funk in 1988. Designing and improving bikes has been a lifelong obsession for Daryl, but what has always set him apart from the crowd is his ethos of questioning and re-thinking the status-quo. Since its inception, Funk Cycles has espoused this passion for trying to make bikes perform better, creating hand-built, innovative, and insightful designs that stand apart from the crowd.

And I even posted a email directly from Daryl earlier in the thread that he verifies it was one of the very first ones....
If you'll send me your email I will forward the original email to you.

Re: Funk Pro Comp

FYI: Before I wrote I indeed also did some reading at the website:

When you go to the website and go under "Explore" you will see that Funk Cycles itself writes that it was
established in 1989. You can look it up for yourself and so can everybody else.
Plus there is an interesting article in the "Denverpost" from 2013 and it refers to Funk Cycles as 24 years old...
2013 - 24 = 1989 so again the year 1989.
(I know that on the website under history they wrote "1988")

But again, wheter Funk Cycles was established in 1989 or maybe (unlikely) in 1988...
you still claim to have bought the bike in 1987 BEFORE the company was established!! :) LOL

Plus the color is called "FLUOR" not Flour or Flower or anything else with "F";)

Just to clarify my point here: Vintage Funk MTB's are outstanding bikes, I own an ultra rare Funk with box fork myself -unpainted in "brushed finish" instead of paint the frame was brushed....
So of course your bike is also very nice and kind of unique,
you should just get the facts straight so that any potential buyer
knows what he buys. Hope you understand now.

Re:

Forgive me on this as members sales should not be getting grief.

Sometimes when a company starts with a product it can be sometime before they actually become a company. A good example would be microsoft that registered as a company in April 1975 but were developing and manufacturing before that . Very few companies start from scratch on the day they are formed.

Similar in a way some bike companies start with prototypes or small batches to see if company viability is even viable. This line off Funks own website might explain, Daryl has been designing and building bikes since the ’80s, and founded Funk Cycles back in 1989.

Now I am not saying anything about this bikes date of birth but simply pointing out sometimes there are differences between company formations and when they actually started

Re: Funk Pro Comp

You certainly seem awfully committed to disqualifying based upon semantics.

I'm certain a reporter from the Denver Post is the end all expert on everything Funk cycles, but.....your math could certainly use some work also.
24 years ago (and how many months?) from a unknown month in 2013 ? to a unknown month in the past. Hmm.... that could in its self vary over a year and could come close to being 2 years off.

What I quoted above is from Funk Cycles > explore > history

This is quoted from what you are referring ...
Daryl has been designing and building bikes since the ’80s, and founded Funk Cycles back in 1989.

So, it seems not even Funk is sure of their own beginning, but it certainly alludes to Daryl making bikes before he founded the company on *whatever* date is correct.

When I emailed them for verification about this bike not having a serial # on it I told them it was bought at 'The Bike Beat' in Orange California from Jay Mackinnon who owned the store and I did state the year was 1987.
Daryl (as you can see earlier in the thread) did not refute that or make any mention of it.

So.....
more semantics ?

BTW, on the color.
I posted it as being Flour or possibly Flower and honestly I did not at that time, and still do not at this time, recall exactly which was, or is, correct.
Hell, it's been right close to 30 years ago.....how much do you honestly recall from that long ago ?

Re: Funk Pro Comp

Wow, heated debate. Have we already seen a picture of a 1988 Funk? Well, here it is. It's the 1988 Prototype.

Re: Funk Pro Comp

Alright, I took it out back of my house for some sunlight pictures.

This is exactly the color that it is, not one iota different...

The front hub, find another in 28 spoke with the EXACT same part # (hint: you will exhaust your Googlisms).
Go ahead, count the spokes.

Is it a real Keith Bontrager handrolled MA40 ?
You be the judge.

Was the XT crankset hand polished by me, you bet.

Are those cable stays welded like every other Funk or are they POP Riveted like a prototype ?
I dunno, my eyes are not that good any more, you decide.

Kids, I swear....

Re: Funk Pro Comp

BTW, I would have put it more directly in the sun but the way the paint glows really messes with a digi-cam and I have a few to choose from. It's just about uncapturable (is that a word?) with a camera.

Re: Funk Pro Comp

What bolloxs is going on here

Mate its COOL, really cool. And a fair price too, its only £675 in English money, and you cant buy a lot of Funk here for that...!!!

Even with customs and postage its bloody good value. And I have some Bontrager roll downs, and had the same pair of rims as shown on yours bitd for my team bike and they did use the same road ma40 rim, I just wish I still had them...

I just wish this was an inch bigger, and im gutted its not. GLWS.

Re: Funk Pro Comp

650w was a 27" rim so guess it is an original bonty re-roll. 28 hole xt m730 hubs were about in the 89 groupset (so late 8:cool:. Pot rivited cable guides were the norm on the early bikes too.

That colour (note the correct spelling :D ) is awesome .

Could you give us an idea of shipping cost to the UK please?
