Pressing in headset cups

i should look for a better local bike shop.

even if my lbs were to charge me, i would pay in custard creams and kind.

only done once but removing an old headset and crown and installing cost me about that much, about $20 CDN.

I use the threaded rod, washers and a couple of bits of mdf with holes drilled to fit the screwed rod through. Costs buttons, as for the crown race a piece of 1 1/4 plastic pipe with the end taped up will do I've heard. Do a google search for homemade crown race setter

Yep, some ABS plastic plumbing tubing works to install the crown race/baseplates

Second the sash clamp and throw the headset cups in the freezer for an hour or two it will shrink them. Handfit them before and after you will see the difference.

Sockets from a socket set usually fit neatly inside the headset and act to keep everything straight too if you are going for the 'threaded bar' technique.

:shock: i'm very surprised at all the "wood & hammer" responses. Are people not worried about the HS going in crooked and ovalizing the headtube?

Incredibly worried. But mixed with the heady smell of GT-85 you can't beat the thrill and the challenge.

and you need soft wood especially if the cups are soft alu.

Should soon post a fancy DIY tool but I need to thread the upper part :roll:

the small adapter with the lip fits perfectly into a 1" headset. it's inside diameter also fits exactly a 5/8" threaded rod. thus keeping everything straight and proper.

the larger adapters fit exactly inside 1 1/8" headtube. however the inner diameter is larger that the 5/8" rod, but the small adapter also fits into the larger adapters (both lipped and without lip).

not perfect, but with a bit of creative mix and matching, you get pretty close to what you need.
