Had it brought to my attention last week through a thread on here that these things (dog collars) are getting a bit thin on the ground and as a result very pricey. As I'll soon need one myself and being a tight arse, I decided to have a crack at knocking up something similar.
The idea is simple, although a lathe is recommended, and is based on a cheap seatpost clamp (£2.99 CRC). The first job is to drill a hole, about 2.5mm, staight through the centre of the securing bolt. This takes a bit of patience to avoid breaking the drill and you'll struggle to get it central without using a lathe. The second job is to bore the clamp right through to fit the frame. If you have bought the correct sized clamp for your frame you could possibly just file the lip off. As I bought a 28.6 and needed 30 (it was cheapest option) this was a job for the lathe again.
The other job I did was to drill a very short 6mm hole at the end of the thread where the bolt doesn't reach. This gives an option for inserting outer cable on the later frames with v-brake stops and running cantis. See 2nd picture to better explain this point.
Basically it just goes on the seatpost like a normal seatclamp but swung through 90 degrees with the bolt (now a cable guide) on the left. I also intend to machine/file a scallop out of the bottom at the front like a proper dog collar so it sits lower.
I'm not the best at explaining things so have a look at the photos, see what you think. The first photo shows one on a 95ish Kona intended for a dog collar and second photo shows one as an adapter on a 99 Kona. Don't think they'll be gracing BoTM winning Konas but it could save you a few bob.
