Ponder on front mech.........

Hi everyone,
A quick question regarding a front mech. I have to mount an xt mech on a freshly painted frame, so no clues on seat tube where the previous
one sat. It's being paired with an xt compact crankset, anyone know
a rule indicating where it should be sited?

IT's been that for a long time, I guess the newer XTR has a better tolerance.
It's always used to be 1-3mm http://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/v/M ... ewsIndex=1 and you'll see it for the specific mech on it's installation notes.

1mm is very close. Obviously that's new XTR, so kinda state of the art. 2-3mm is more commonly considered proper, as it allows for a little flex and slop. I think lower end shimano still has 3mm on the red sticker.

Every shimano mech I've ever bought has had the same red 1-3mm sticker. I usually aim for below 2.

That's M960.. Hardly new, but yeah I'd go for 3mm personally.
