I saw a half wit down Sloane Square on the Kings road riding a penny farthing and wearing tweads...

I saw a guy riding a penny farthing recently but it looked like a kinda punk fixie courier style penny farthing, covered in stickers and no where near as tall as a real old school penny farthing. Can't remember if he was wearing tweeds, or lycra or his office clothes.

There are a lot of middle aged men on very expensive looking carbon bikes wearing very expensive looking outfits round here. I only live a few miles from the centre of London (where people who can afford these bikes work) so I doubt they're riding much more than 5-6 miles each way. I don't find them a problem but I personally wouldn't dress up like that, I prefer just to have a job which doesn't require a suit and I wear any old stuff when commuting however have some fairly understated cycling kit for long rides. To be honest you can get round any part of London easily enough without breaking a sweat unless you live somewhere like High Barnet on the outskirts with a few big hills to climb on the way home, in any case sweating on the way home isn't the issue. Re. rain. My dad used to run to work everyday in London. He was a keen runner and kept running diaries which included weather conditions amongst other things (I know  ) anyway he reckoned if you run or cycle to work in London you probably only have an average or approx 15 journeys out of each working year when it's actually raining while you're on the road. That seems hard to believe now I've written it, maybe he was trying to put me off buying lyrca. He's a bit of a nerd btw.

For me cycling accessories in general, inc a lot of the lycra kit is just a lot of consumer stuff pushed on us by the bike industry to waste money on which don't really add to my pleasure of cycling, however if people find it makes cycling more enjoyable for them then why not

Re:

Where would a n get tyres for that hoor of a yoke....!

I ride my 501 Peugeot tourer to work in jeans and shirt. Change the shirt and shoes quick squirt of Dr.Smellgood and is all good. If it rains I have overtrousers and a rain jacket.. Simples. I go out with the club in cycling gear but not on the commute - no way

Seen one of them tits the other day waiting at lights. I got the green light and I webbed it That cnut got on my wheel so I emptied the tank and dropped the useless git. I could here him puffing and panting ...

What he failed to realise is that I do a wee bit of training as well as commuting.... Id be no great shakes in the grand scheme of things. He was Gabba to the max with a carbon bike.. Tut Tut getting passed by a scruffy 1985 steel bike with gaurds and pannier racks .. Id say he had a little weep over his morning coffee !!

So is that what it's all about then?

This has descended from do you or don't you with a bit of a playful poke to the usual over the top snide exclusionary vitriol.

Shame really. Imagine looking at this from the outside. Would you join?

Sorry Mercian long gone, & when I moved to live in France the mover kindly lost some of my kit ( as it spent some time in his storage) until we found a house, among some the missing stuff was a cardboard box with my life's worth of bikie photo's, pi**ed off was an under statement,Bike was 22" the frame was finished in Kingfisher blue/green, with white seat, down, & head tube panels, lugs lined in gold, 531 tubes & forks Gnutti cotterless c/set campag nouvo record rear mech for the "geary" time, both sets of wheels had Campag hubs, track rear for the fixed Mavic rims,Brooks saddle, big copper rivets " jobbie" Carradice Saddlebag the one you could get 2weeks worth of groceries in. when the weather got a bit "iffy" i used to put 2 house bricks in the saddle bag to keep the rear end under control, early season TT's gear restricted, rode the bike to event Saturday evening took off Mudguards /Lights/ & Saddlebag.raced early Sunday refitted the removed bits & rode home Thoroughly enjoyable.

The handling on twisty single track must be "interesting"

As for the original point of this thread, I wear lycra whenever I ride my bikes (road & offroad btw). I've tried baggy shorts and didn't really like them tbh, I much prefer the comfort of lycra gear. I would also add that I don't think it's necessarily the lycra that makes you a pratt, I've met plenty of pratts wearing other types of clothing.

Re: Lycra garbed pratts

I ride to work in Lycra. I like to ride hard, then shower and change at the office.

I stop at lights.

I see far more "normals" running lights than people dressed like me.

there is nothing more comfortable to ride in. It's designed for the purpose.
