Yeah I've had a couple crmo main triangle only and an all HiTen that I single speeded, All surprisingly still fun to ride.
Pleas help me identify my bike.

There must be some bike-expectation-inflation going on because this is way above what I'd have considered a BSO, it didn't make me run screaming from the room with my eyes covered for a start

Could be a 1998 Wildwood, they came in red and have the cromo seattube listed. Pics don't show the seattube swoopy stripes tho. I have a feeling 98 wildood and 99 Outlook are same frame, but just guessing.
If it's a 98 Wildwood, someone took its already cheap Altus crank and put an even cheaper crank on it tho
Maybe the Shimano sticker guy did that.
Compare specs in bikepedia. Keep in mind bikepedia specs are usually North American market specific so if you're far from there then your market may have been different.
Check date codes on parts against info @ vintage trek website for more hints.
Really though, it's six of one half dozen of the other.
