I'm not a fan of Konas either but at least they have great frames
I think we should look instead at GT and Specialised.
GT with their BMX heritage made ridiculous frames that carried far too much weight and had a frankly stupid rear brake setup that was spongier than a spongy thing in a spongiest thing of the year competition.
Specialised were not specialised at all and looked like racing bikes with 26" wheels with their boring frame configuration.

I spent £120 having the frame, forks and stem of my 1991 Karakoram Elite powdercoated, and around the same on the Alfine hub:

I don't regret it for a second, I love the frame and the bike perfectly suits my needs as it is built.

There are an awful lot of tarted up low end bikes around here. I look at them and think how much better to ride an XT-equipped kilauea would be than a bling-dripped XTR'ed fire mountain.

Quality frames are one of those things you dont really understand until you try them whereas pretty colours have an obvious appeal.

What determines quality though, sometimes the "best" tubing in a line is not the best for you or what your preferences in a ride are. In my case 1989 Tange Prestige Bridegestone MB-1 vs 1993 Bridgestone MB-3 with Ritchey Logic tubing. Although the Prestige was a fine subtle ride I prefered the liveliness of the thicker Logic tubing although the size and geometry numbers were identical. Here is a interesting test that explores different frames in a blind test.

See I prefer my xt equipped voodoo erzulie to the much higher specced columbus tubed kilaeua. I put it down to being an ignorant pleb though x
