Why?

I learnt at a very early age it scratches/destroys everything on your bars and your saddle.
Just hang the saddle on a tree branch if there's one available.

The only time this practice is socially acceptable is if you have bar ends fitted to protect everything on the bars.

Depends on the bike setup and surface.

Grass for example does little damage and newer risers stop anything important being scratched on the bars as it only the grips that touch the ground.

Its also much easier to put a wheel in with the bike sitting upside down on the ground than hanging from a tree...

I meant for indexing gears or for removing a wheel or bolting a crank back on. To replace wheel it's easiest with the bike the correct way up on the ground (as the post above).

In reality: No, but you'd get a dirty look and would never be allowed to borrow any of my bikes

In my opinion it's a very disrespectful way of treating a bike. Even for cheaper bikes (like most of mine have been).
