Had the same issue on my modern bike, was quite happy to blame the bottom bracket until I worked it out!I had a similar situation on my Kuwahara recently. After taking the pedals apart, changing the bearings and re-greasing, I discovered It was the saddle. #justsaying
Good news!It was a simple fix in this case. I rammed some grease in there and did not notice any noise and have been on a several hour ride.
I did on the other hand encounter a brutal 25% hill which wiped me out. Even 14 gear inch did little to take the sting out of that!
