Pedals making a crunchy/clicky sound yet spin smoothly. Salvageable?

It was a simple fix in this case. I rammed some grease in there and did not notice any noise and have been on a several hour ride.

I did on the other hand encounter a brutal 25% hill which wiped me out. Even 14 gear inch did little to take the sting out of that!

(You should get an eBike for those hills :D (only joking))
 
Pedals will spin freely even without any bearings in them. Friend of mine had some old Sakae's of mine - and when the cups were pitted, and the axles too they started making crunching sounds and being stiff to turn - so he simply dumped the remains of the bearings out. The pedals were loose, and wobbled but he did hundreds of miles touring on them without further issue.
