Pedal spanners 15mm/17mm - what works, what doesn't?

I have used my old zaskar seatpost with a halfrauds pro 15mm spanner shoved up it. It has just worn out after 18 years use. Bought a replacement at a car boot for the next upteen years

I would never use a spanner that was made for the cycling enthusiast or home mechanic as they are just not up to the task, unless the parts are newish or fitted & removed on a regular basis & were low torque. I always use good quality drop forged chrome vanadium spanners (Facom) where ever possible.

Remember buy once wisely & it will last a lifetime.

This.

Most of my spanners and tools are Facom, lifetime warranty that they actually honour and not as expensive as people expect them to be.

Take it from a pro... the best pedal spanner out there is the one from Cyclus tools. Mine's done three years of crappy rustbucket pedal loosening - with torque from extension tubes and has barely a scratch. It's about 7mm thick so won't work on some pedals....but will still be going strong when I retire...

Re:

well i ordered the big park tool earlier this year, as i had ruined the 15mm spanner from my cheapo set

it successfully removed a grotty pedal as required, but then last week i had another toughie to remove and it's turned to cheese.

will get a photo up - really surprised and am thinking about sending it back to CRC or Park to see what they say - no extension bars involved, and I'm not exactly Geoff Capes!

From what i can tell it seems to be all about the vanadium? This is the other side if my UNIOR spanner:

Re:

Here we go, generally like park tools and have been happy to pay the bit extra they tend to cost.

But check theses pictures

The Park pedal wrench you buy now and the Park pedal wrench I've had for 20 odd years are two different animals. Their pro stuff is still good, but the quality of the consumer stuff has gone downhill.
