Paypal has two advantages over bank transfers

1. Paying for things by credit cards which would give you more security if good times go bad. I would say that Paypal offers extra services too, but my experience is that they aren't great.

2. A secret fund that your partner doesn't know about. Combined with posting to work, it's a marriage saver.

Internet banking is free and quick and convenient.


(Most banks offer it for free) - Aliance and Leicester and also HSBC I bank with have these systems in place. It takes minutes to do and its free. Enough said.

before paypal i always used to use bank transfers as much as possible. I used to use it with the old Yahoo auction before moving to ebay when it shut down. I was fine with bank transfers, easy, hasstle free. But other people don't like it, they think you're trying to rip them and to be fair there are a lot of people trying to do just that, where as in the early days there wern't... so i have to put up with the fees purely because its less hastle.

Incidently, didn't paypal use to charge as a buyer aswell as a seller? Or is that my memory...

& I like to get my stuff fast

It sits between the banks where they take the interest gained on the cash, (something like £30 million a year!!) The banks have been critisised for doing this. Barclays has had instant banking for many years. e.g. pay some cash over the counter and then go to the cash machine it'll be in your account. The other banks have only recently changed to this, HSBC in the last year or two.

All the banks (but not Building Societies) are now trialling instant transfers between different banks, but some only for small amounts, i think below £35 but i could be mistaken, it's only what the chap at HSBC told me when i moaned it took so long to transfer cash from Barclays to them.

BACS transfers are now same-day in the UK, irrespective of amount or bank.

afaik paypal is always free if sent from the paypal balance to a non-premium account (i.e. an account that will not accept credit card payment). the biggest chunk of the fees are not paypal fees but credit card fees that PP has to pay. the same as if you pay your dinner with a credit card and the restaurant owner has to swallow the >3% credit card fee. they accept the fees because it is much more convinient for the guests and the guests won't even bother to visit if CCs wouldn't be accepted.

same if you choose to have a PP account that accepts credit card payments. you will attract more "customers" and thus achieve a higher price that offsets the PP fees.
if you don't like the fees chose a personal account and live with the disadvantages it has - assuming it's still that way.

i see no reason to not like Paypal and after all it's not mandatory to use it...

Has a bank manager just joined the forum and this thread has been hijacked to support our banking system?

I recently bought a cook ring off Neilll and a surly tensioner from Harryburgundy ,i set one of those sent payments to gift ,cant remember to which one or even why for that matter,if either member can check his received payments from me ,we'll know for sure

If, as the poster claims the fees aren't paid for gift payments ,then i reckon there will be a limit on how much a single person can 'gift' each year

Just received some as a gift and it worked - if there's not refund option then I guess it's something to use for "trusted" sellers
