In the "Bike" magazine from April 1994 it is written that it is indeed Titanium Plating. The titanium is probably vapour-deposited here, something like the lenses of Oakley sunglasses. But I don't know exactly.

Hi - is there any way that one can still get a copy (physical or scanned) of this very issue of BIKE magazine? It was the first MTB mag I bought when I was 11 that started my journey loving bikes. I think this article was from the feature "grand bikes for a grand" if I recall?

I lost my copy when I moved out of my parent's house and Ive never been able to find it again!
