Panasonic MC6500 build

Re:

Black it is then! Maybe a little boring and I did toy with the idea of painting the chainring gunmetal grey. Maybe next time - many think the finish won't last 5 minutes anyway!

And the fork I wanted to use, but can't. Would it be possible to fit a 1" steerer to this?

Likely not without great difficulty, and expense.

Hello there.

Cool looking bike, the way you have it set up so far. Painting cranks and rings isn't the best way to go, really, as they suffer so much abrasion and abuse even during regular use. These pieces are generally anodized when new, as such a surface finish is much more durable than would be either paint or powder-coat.

But - who knows - it might work out for you; give em a try, and see how it all works out ...

Re:

I've never built a bike wheel before, but over time I've amassed a couple of Shimano XT hubs, some Halo Whiteline rims and a bunch of Sapim spokes and nipples.

I was going to leave it to someone that knows what they are doing, but after reading Sheldon Brown's very comprehensive article on the subject I thought I'd give it a bash.

Progress soon!

Re:

A couple of stickers added too to give it a bit of identity. Apologies to purists for, well everything really.

Re:

Getting the wheels together wasn't so bad! Quite a nice job really. A couple of wrong turns on both wheels, but easily corrected!

Still got plenty of work to do to actually get them round and true though!

Re:

And at least I can now start to check the tyres have decent clearance on the frame, which happily they do!

Re:

Very cool project, and very impressed you built the wheels too! Always terrifying to me even with the Sheldon article.

Good work fella!

Re:

Thanks! Truing the wheels is not easy!

I'm not surprised - I'm using the frame to hold the wheels and judging by eye. One eye closed for increased accuracy. Probably not the best method!

I was proud of myself with the rear as I managed to get it pretty central compared to where it started, but the front was much more difficult as the fork moved around!

It's time to hand them over to someone with suitable competence and perhaps a truing stand!

Re:

I think this will be it until after Christmas.

I'm not sure whether I like the brake levers and haven't really made my mind up over cantis, vbrakes or Maguras to be honest.

The wheels still need a professional tension and tru, but I really wanted to check clearance for the tyres, which is all good.

Not happy with the saddle or seat post, so will keep looking.

As it stands:
