Has anyone experienced difficulty when striping paint from a frame using Nitromors?

I am attempting to refurbish a 1997 Kona Muni Mula, but the clear lacquer top coat appears to be a version of 2-pack.

First attempt this morning… virtually no affect at all.

There are places where the lacquer has previously been chipped; a few cable rub areas / bit of Chain stuck, but the Nitromors merely took off my touch-up Humbrol paint and a bit of a Decal.

I've since tried distressing / keying the surface, but so far nothing doing. I have just popped in now to type this, but after 30 minutes so far, there doesn’t appear to be any peeling of paint.

Strange, even the lacquer should turn into a jelly like substance with Nitromors,i used it on my FUNK when i had it and it shifted the old powdercoating fine.
Some people do say that using Nitromors 'can' damage the new paint as aluminium is porous and residue can sit there inside the metal and eat its way out of new paint so be extra careful, didnt have problems myself but think ARGOS chem cleaned the frame beforehand.

How long are you leaving the nitromorse on to work???

Nitromors starts working almost instantly on the right sort of paint / lacquer / bare skin :!: . Don't know the answer, sorry.

Is it a new tin of Nitromors ??

I had a similar problem with a tin I'd left in the shed for a couple of years.
Think it goes off over time. I binned and got a new one.

This 2nd attempt has now been on for 45minutes, and is only slightly creeping under the edges of areas where the lacquer top coat has previously been chipped off.

Yeah got it yesterday.
The version that I bought is “All purpose Nitro Mors Paint & Varnish Remover” Masonry, Metal & Wood – New Double Strength Formula.

After reading the small print on the tin, I noticed it does say “Not suitable for car paint or for contacts with plastic,” which is rather disappointing as it cost me £15!

Is there a version specifically for vehicle (therefore also bicycle) paint removal? I have searched the net, but can’t currently find any more information.

If it is a Steel frame, you could use Caustic Soda in a wallpaper paste mix. DO NOT use it on Aluminium frame, it will be destroyed!

I’ll have to give the Caustic Soda tip a miss, as the Muni Mula is indeed boasting its Aluminium-ness.

I’ve taken a picture that manages to shows the effect of the Nitromors. It has kind of pitted the surface through to the undercoat – you can see on the stays where I have slightly rubbed the frame over with a view to disrupting the surface.

The Nitromors was on that Dropout for about 45 minutes.

personally, i'd get a paddle sander on a drill and give the frame a quick kicking first to really tear up the laquer & existing paint. alternatively, it may be cheaper (and a lot less hassle) if there is a media blaster anywhere near you that can just blast the old paint off.

Cheers jax13 - I reckon that’s good advice.

The guy who’s doing the powder coating can also sand blast too. He will be painting the frame for beer money. I just wanted to give him less hassle, as he’ll be fitting the job in after work.

I’ve just got back with some coarse Wet & Dry, so hopefully I’ll get most of the paint off.
