Pace...where's it all going?

Think the routing is very similar to the On-One style hose route

Just a thought, aren't On-one's steel, wonder where they are made...

not same factory......

we are having a similar ish discussion on french forum about a brand of bikes which are designed in france but built in far east .

the owner and designer was jsut saying that there are not that many people in taiwan with knowledge and ressources to build steel quality bikes ( I mean bikes to ride , even cheap ones like On one not supermarket bikes ) . they dont have much choice when it comes to suppliers .

What has Brant Richards done to you Dr S ?

I don't own an On One or a Ragley and don't really have a desire to either but this guy (Richards) not only made steel hardtails trendy again and also affordable to the masses

And last but not least he invented a whole new market for long travel hardtails that can be used as AM/XC touring , commuting , sus / rigid , flat bar / drop bar . And lets not forget this is one model (In Bred) .

Not the On One/ Richards debate again
OK, you asked...

Its the hype I can't stand. Back when he was Zak Tempest in MBUK everyone was so gushing- he's great, he's so cool, but why?? what did he do that was cool(apart from ride a Yo Eddy with a dubious build)?

Then the On One days, oh he's great, the bikes are cool! Why??

I'll tell you why. Just because you had a load of keyboard warriors who wanted to build a cheep winter hack to save their over the top full sussers getting trashed in the grit and mud they went out and bought a cheap nasty hardtail frame and hey presto! Wow! Hardtails are great, hardtails are cool. Problem is that they were just rubbish frames, rubbish tubing welded in a sweat shop in the far east. Why are they great? because they are cheap?? Do people say Protons and Ladas were great because they were cheap? Supermarket own brand beans are great because they are cheap??
99% of these guys had never riden a good quality hardtail so had nothing to guage them against. Its like going from public transport to a battered old £200 Corsa and claiming its fantastic- of course it is, because thats all they know.
If he made top quality products then I could understand the hype but its just all bollocks. I don't think he invented anything or is an innovator at all. As for inventing the long forked hardtail????? :? Hes just a ex-journo/business man who has contributed nothing at all. Do we aplaud Apollo or Halfords for making affordable bikes?? Why does On One get plaudits? Because it's slick marketing and hype thats why, backed up my the army of arselickers he has on Singletrackworld.

I have nothing at all against him, I'm sure he is a top bloke and I admire how he has made a good living selling tosh, but to constantly see him hailed as a god over the last 20 years has become tiresome to say the least. If he started handbuilding fantastic frames here in the UK using the best materials and craftsmanship then I would reconsider....

Can we get back on topic now?

Completely agree on the On One comments...not really groundbreaking at all.

As for the Pace it's just another 'cool' steel hardtail in a market now flooded with 'cool' and 'retro' hardtails...I can't really get excited about it really.

I really love the good old classic retro bikes of the past, i have owned various retro classics but at the end of the day if you want a bike you can ride day in day out short rides all day rides, you just can not beat a new designed frame, im speaking for the steel Ragley bluepig here as its a hradtail and thats what this topic is all about, and im sure 99% of people on here would really have to agree if they rode 1.
The new Ragley Bluepig is a stunning loomking frame its has so much caracter ( how ever you spell it ) flat bits angled bits gusset bits pointy bits, its a box standard looking frame, eg 2 triangles, but with modern looks.
Im going to post my pics of my finished built up bluepig for all to see, if i took off the transfers and put the frame up on here nobody would be able to tell if it was an old or new frame, to me its all about the ride, i ride very aggressivly and thats why iv got a bluepig, although id never turn up to a retro bike meet on it id have to come on the Pace or Clockwork beacuase thats what retrobikes is all about have fun on old bikes, bikes have come on like cars have come on, which for is for the better.
P.S neil g........ Brant has produced an amazing frame with the Ragley, its a 873 steel triple butted internaly and externaly frame how can yoy say thats crap, UNLIKE PACE you cant ride of a curb without the cracking!!!!!!
and they were probably the most expensive bikes made back in the early 80s, ragley are made in the best frame build shop in Taiwan if the frames were made over here they would probably cost a hell of a lot more, thanks to the taiwan workshop they are cheaper

ragley are made in the best frame build shop in Taiwan

Thats like saying 'the best restaraunt in Barnsley' or 'the best shoe shop in Beirut' though isn't it? Neither places you'd want to take your custom.

Who says it's the best anyway? Ragley? I bet they do! 'Cracking place, full of funny kids with no shoes!'

I'm sure its a nice bike but lets not pretend its not in the same league as a Pace frame. They are built to a price- you pays yer money......

At 5.5lbs its a little porky too

Dr S its the lightest long travel frame you can buy, its a full on 150mm travel hardtail, you can not campare it to a Pace, im not being biast iv got both, and i no for a fact i will never go out on a ride on the Pace again, the Pace is old its feels like an old thing thats made of rubbish alloy, its a race machine not a burly hardtail, these are too complete diffrent bikes PAce being alloy and Ragley being steel ALTHOUGH you can do anything on the Raglay but hardly anything on the Pace.
Pace couldnt get it right from the start thats why there welder left and production ceased because they made the biggest cockup of all time
It doesnt really matter were frames are made i must agree, as they are made to the speck the customer wants it and QC will be done to make sure it is, if you want something made cheap and rubbish they will make it for you if you want something made to a high standard they will do that for you too.
LOL There handbags are more expensive than there bikes!!!

Just as well it has all that tube butting inside and out, would hate to think all that money went on a gas pipe special, which brings us full circle to on one again :p (before any one rants, I have a 2010 inbred and I love it!)

Out of interest I cant find any mention of an 853 Bluepig on the website?

At the end of the day the ragley is another niche bike, intended for completely different sort of riding than the Pace frames of yester year. How the ragley niche compares to the niche that the RC104 etc are looking to occupy I can't comment but I would of thought with the use of touches like fillet brazing, they are going to be looking at a slightly different market.

I'm more interested to hear what Si' has planned for the back of his shed... I am intrigued! Anything to do withj a load of frame building jigs that popped up for sale not so long ago?

Hope

With all this "chat " about uk manufactuers out sourcing from bikes to beds and parasols to paint to which I am a victim myself and is why i'm unemployed at the moment , there is one ray of Hope (no pun intended)

Hope tech can only be described as a great sucess within the British Cycling industry , just a pity they don't make frames ! And perhaps the likes of Pace and Saracen should look at Hope and take note .
